Oi meus amigos! Hi my friends. I am still in Brazil. haha. It has been a week and a half now. Today was a pretty low key day. I did not go to sleep until late last night and then it was later than late because I could not fall asleep. And then, very early this morning one of the alarms of the cars in our little parking lot went off like forever. I am not sure what the issue was...
Anyhow, so I made a very Brazilian breakfast this morning... toast with jelly and butter and an apple. This of course is very sarcastic. However, the apple was a Portuguese apple and it was a little tarty, but juicy. I did some dishes this morning and headed over to Centro, downtown Curitiba, to get a notarized copy of my passport for the police registration tomorrow. This went very smoothly and I had some time to kill before class, so I went to the park near my class. I compiled a list of souvenirs to buy and such. Pretty exciting and then I just sat and people watched. It was really awesome because someone had put some fruit out on this stand and these exotic mini-parrot looking birds were eating the fruit right near me. Quite a site.
Class went well. We learned about prepositions, large numbers, and buying/selling items. Prepositions in Portuguese are confusing because you can combine some of them with articles and also many of them depend on if the word their being used with is masculine/feminine and plural/singular. Also, the same preposition can be used for different meanings. Oh, and it was funny/sad because our teacher asked us to say the year of an important day in our country and 3 of the 4 Americans had no idea. Luckily, Roman had this American booklet that had special dates in it like the Declaration of Indep and the Constitution. I think I will go with the fact that we are in another country and filling our brains with a lot of things to be memorized, so those dates just sort of disappeared. Also, it was very sad because those same 3 Americans did not know what band Mic Jagger was from. I have heard the name... in a more recent song, but I did not know he was from the Rolling Stones. Going to another country really makes you realize how much you really do not know about your own country. lol
After class, Carlos and Keri showed Roman and I where we could get out photos taken for the police registration. It was a little sketch in my mind because it was the upstairs of this shopping area and it was in this little room where the photographer was a 12 yr old kid. No lie. I am assuming his parents own the place and he is like an apprentice. He was very sweet though because my hair was looking a mess and I just said whatever and sat down and took the picture. And then he said "oh beautiful" in English, not Portuguese. He was very sweet.
After the pictures were done I left Roman and Ksenia, who were off to Capoeira class, which is actually really cool. Back in the day when there were slaves in Brazil, around the same time as when America had slaves I do believe, the slaves wanted to be fit and know how to fight. So, they would practice fighting moves and such, but they did not want their masters to know, so they turned it into dancing. So, Capoeira is like dance fighting. Even though it has dancing moves, it is still very intense and serious. Most of the people who do it, guys and girls even, are very fit and can seriously do some damage. Anyhow, I thought I was going to miss the bus because my bus comes every 30 min and it was like 6:30Pm, so I was fast walking and I was not paying attention and there was a hump in the sidewalk and I fell right behind the bus stop... I was very embarrassed. But really no one knows me, so I guess it was not a huge deal. I made the bus because traffic was insane, so the bus was a little late.
I came home and was ready for some food and I realized a lot of the meat and cheese I had bought the past weekend was going to expire after today. So I made an intense sandwich, like really intense. I am pretty sure I got 3 daily servings of meat in that sandwich. lol
The rest of the night should be pretty low key. I am going to do some research on site seeing in the area and I will probably watch the telenovela here. Telenovelas are very very popular. They are Brazilian soap operas, but like everyone watches them. I need to get used to hearing Portuguese, so watching tv is a good way to do this. Also, I discovered that they have the tv shows Lost, CSI, Spongebob, and Big Brother brasil. Sadly, I have not experienced Spongebob in Portuguese yet, but I hope to figure out the channel and time soon.
Tomorrow I have my appointment at the police station to register. We actually get a temporary identification document and in 3 months I will have a hard copy of it. My friend Keri told me that with this ID I can set up a bank account and apply for a license. Pretty crazy. My friend Julio is picking Roman and I up. Then, we have class and after class a group of us from class are going over to Keri's for dinner and games. Then, some of us are heading over to the Calvary church for a bible study. There are separate studies for guys and girls and apparently the girls study the different women from the bible and the guys study the men. It should be good.
This is all for now. Thanks for reading. TTYL
