Oh Monday... Today was a blah day, but yesterday was not too bad. I ended up going to the Calvary church with Ksenia, Carlos, Roman, and Keri. We met at the mall and took a bus over to the area where the church is. I was really embarrassed because when we got on the bus I was just trying to find a place to stand, but the buses here load and leave. So, I was not holding onto anything when the bus started moving and I flew back onto these two girls. My friend Carlos had to grab me and pull me forward. Everyone on the bus was staring at me like what the heck. lol. Again I was very embarrassed. When we got off the bus we were a little early so we stopped and got a snack at a pastry/sandwich shop. I got this really tasty treat that was sweet bread with vanilla cream inside of it with chocolate sprinkles and frosting on top with strawberries. We walked a couple blocks from the bus stop and pastry shop to the church. It was cool because we walked on United States Street.
The church itself was pretty small, but nicely decorated. It was two stories and we arrived while the congregation was singing. There were probably between 20 and 30 people at the evening bilingual service. The worship was done with some songs in English and some different songs in Portuguese. The pastor is a Korean American from California. Once the worship was done the pastor prayed and then there was a woman translator who repeated everything in Portuguese. The current book that is being studied is Revelations and the topic of the day was worship. What exactly worship is and what should be included when worshiping. The pastor was very very energetic. The translator was not as energetic. I am wondering if this affected how the Brazilian people in the congregation perceived the sermon. I thought it was very well done and definitely was very meaningful. I do not think my Russian friend Ksenia liked it as much as I did. I think in Russia the church experience is more traditional and orthodox. After the sermon was over, we sang one more song and then dispersed. A girl named Priscilla approached our group and was very welcoming. She noticed we were new. She had just graduated college with a psychology degree and is currently teaching English classes. She spoke English very well. After church we caught another bus to the area where Keri and Carlos live. We rode the bus with a girl from the church who Carlos had met before. She is from Germany and had been studying classes here for 6 months. I believe she was leaving today. It was the craziest thing because she was speaking English with what I assumed to be an underlying German accent, but then she had a British English accent. It was very impressive. Her Portuguese was impressive as well.
Once we got off the bus we went and ate dinner at Au-Au which is a Curitibano fast food -ish restaurant. Their specialty is hot dogs and they have very large and tasty looking salads. I ordered a traditional Au-Au hot dog (cachorro quente) and fries (fritas). The hot dog was very good and very different. It was very small but came in a huge bun with tomatoes, onions, ketchup, mustard, peppers, and mayo. Interesting choice of things to put on it, but again I was very impressed with its deliciousness. The fries were quite tasty too. Once we were done eating Ksenia, Roman, and I walked to the bus stop. I did not feel comfortable taking the bus home because it was not my regular bus and I was not sure where it stopped at, so I took a taxi.
Again as I said earlier today was a blah day. I slept in and did not do much. I had been getting to class really early so I decided to leave later, but when I did the bus I normally take did not come. So, I took another bus and ended up being late to class. Class went pretty smoothly though. We learned more about family and using ser and estar verbs.
After class I went to the grocery store with Roman, Ksenia, and Derek, who is an older man in our class who is from England. I bought some bread and then took the bus home. I tried to make a nice dinner, but it didn't turn out very well. The salad was too wet and the spaghetti sauce reminded me of ketchup. My dessert was good though, apple and nutella. :) Oh and it was really awesome because I needed to do laundry and the way it works is my landlord does it. I thought that was very nice... kinda weird in a way, but very nice. She will even put the dry clothes in my room. The only thing I thought ab out though was if I was not supposed to leave my underwear and sock in there. I have a huge sink in my bathroom and some clothes lines to do laundry. Hopefully, it is okay to have left it in there. We will see.
Tomorrow I am going to PUC to meet with my international advisor about registering with the Police dept. here. All out of country visitors have to do this, at least those who are living here temporarily. After I meet with her I believe Roman and I are going to try out a vegetarian restaurant near our class. Roman is vegetarian and I have not been eating enough vegetables. Hopefully, it will be good.
That is all for now. Tchau Tchau (bye bye)
