We went out last night..... Haha. I love me some country music. Anyways, I am updating as events take place, so this is good. Hopefully, I will be consistent.
Last night I went out with my neighbor Susan, my classmate Ksenia, and Susan's friend Hellene (Ellen). We ended up running on Brazilian time and were like 30 minutes late to pick up Ksenia from the mall. Hellene drove us to the disco (dance club) and it was a very interesting system. You go to the door and you have to show some ID. They take your ID and put your name, phone number, and a number from your ID into a computer. Then, they give you receipt/tab with a charge of R$15 for an entry fee. When you buy a drink or food, the waiter writes it on your receipt and at the end of the night when you leave, you give a cashier your tab and pay.
The club itself was really nice in terms of decoration and such. There were two bars, a dance floor, stage, and seating. We were in a reserved section because it was Susan's friend Samya's birthday. Ksenia and I ordered caipirinhas and Ksenia downed hers (she is from Russia and Vodka is an everyday thing starting at breakfast.) while I spent 4 hours drinking mine and did not finish it. Haha. It was made of tonic, a whole lime cut up, and vodka. It was really strong in my opinion. Besides the drink, I met some of Susan and Samya's friends. Most of them spoke English which was good and not good. I really need to practice Portuguese and even though it is very comforting to talk to someone who knows English, I really need to prefect my Portuguese.
There was a live band with 4 guys from 10pm to 1am and they were pretty good. They played very popular Brazilian songs and the crowd would sing along, but then they also played American songs from Creed, Eagle Eye Cherry, Black Eyed Peas, Guns n Roses, and AC/DC. I was in shock. I said omg I know this song. Oh and they sung the songs in English as well. After the live band was done, there was a DJ who again played American music such as Akon, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears, etc. It was so crazy. I just assumed our music was not international. There is even an American radio station and in the car they played Taylor Swift, Rolling Stones (who may not be American... I know this is sad I really do not know. I also did not know Mic Jagger was from the Rolling Stones... yes sad) etc. I wanted to dance on the dance floor but everyone said it was too crowded so we awkwardly danced at our tables. Around 1 am or so, there was a friend of Samya's boyfriend who wanted to dance with Ksenia, but she did not want to. But they kept being persistent and it was like playing telephone because the boy talked to Samya's boyfriend and then the boyfriend talked to Samya and then Samya talked to Ksenia. After the boy realized she was not interested, another friend of his came up to me and was saying kiss my friend. And he started making kissing gestures with his hand. I was pointing and saying on the cheek and he said no. Kiss my friend. In Portuguese, I was saying No thank you I am sorry. Then he was saying por que? por que? Why? why? And I tried to say I do not know him. The whole thing was just weird and awkward. Hellene said the boys in this atmosphere act like this saying kiss me, dance with me, etc. I was not impressed. I would dance if I was asked sincerely and such. Although thinking about this, at least they did not just act impulsively. I went to one other club and that was in the states and there were creepers there who just danced with you without asking and they were gross. So, as friends we had to have a system and sign for "Save me". I told Ksenia this and we made up a sign and when the boy wanted to dance with her, she gave me the sign. Haha. It was funny.
There were a couple of interesting things I noticed while here. One is that couples are very open and affectionate. They will just start making out with you standing right next to them and they do not care. And not cutesy kisses, but like full on making out. I was taken back by this. The cute side of this PDA stuff is that I noticed, not just at the club but around town as well, guys are just very affectionate to their girlfriends/wives. They will play with their hair and rub their back when they are sitting down or talking with other people. I thought it was really sweet. The other thing I noticed/learned was that the party doesn't start until around 11pm to 12pm and then it can last till 4,5,6 etc am. Crazy! Hellene was telling me of this club that used to be open that stayed open till 9 or 10am and part of the cover charge was breakfast. Haha. I thought this was fun.
Anyways after the awkward encounter with the boys, Hellene was going home and Ksenia and I wanted to leave as well. Susan stayed and got a ride from her friends. The whole thing was definitely an interesting experience and I am glad I went, but I think it will be more fun when I go with the friends I meet and when these friends are my age. I was the baby of the group because most of them were 25 or older. Hellene was 31, Susan 27, and Ksenia 28.
As for today, I have been lounging around my room chatting with people. I will leave shortly to go to church. I am interested to see how it operates and such. It is a bilingual calvary church, which I am not sure about the Calvary part. It is a Christian church and not Catholic, but I am not really sure exactly what it is. My friend Keri goes and she said they just go through the books of the bible and right now they are on Revelations. The main pastor/preacher is American and from California and then there is a Portuguese translator. I think it will be good. I am going with Keri, Carlos, Roman, and Ksenia. We are meeting at the mall and taking a bus over. Maybe we will be able to get dinner afterwards.
Until next time...
Tchau tchau
Beijos e bracos! (hugs and kisses)
