Today was a better day than yesterday. I was productive and I ate some good food. :) This morning I met with my international advisor Anelise at my school, PUC, to get everything I need for registering with the police department here. Roman and I had to pay some fees and get some paperwork filled out. We then had to go get some documents notarized downtown, so we took the bus and the notary place was near Roman's apartment, so I followed him when we got off the bus. If you are temporarily living in Brasil, as a student or what have you, then you have to register with the police department within 30 days of your arrival. The main police station is actually quite far off from Centro Curitiba, so two Brazilian students who participated in the exchange program Roman and I are in in the US volunteered to take us there and get us situated. One of the students is Julio, who I met this past semester, when he was studying at VT. The other person is Tatiana, who studied at NC State. Anyhow, so Roman and I were walking to the notary place and Roman turned to me and asked "Oh what is that guy's name again and what is he studying?" I said, " Oh, his name is Julio and he studies Mechatronics", which is a concentration in Industrial & Systems Enge. (ISE) in Curitiba at PUC. Right after I said this I hear "Ashley!". And I am thinking what the heck, I don't know anyone...And who is walking towards us from the gas station, but Julio!! It was so crazy/unbelievable. I was just like "OMG!". Roman and I both were just in awe. We chatted with Julio for a while, he was getting his tires changed on his car, and we figured out the traveling situation for Thursday. And the whole thing was even crazier because Roman and I had been going the wrong way from where we were supposed to be going. So, I know it was God. haha. He wanted us to run into Julio. Really awesome.
After Roman and I got are documents notarized, we went and got food. I got this panqueca, which is like a tortilla with meat, cheese, and veggies inside. It was not very good. I asked if there was pork in it, and I meant like any pig, and the lady said no, but she misunderstood me or I probably said it wrong because there was ham in it. Also, the cheese they use is different. I am not exactly sure what type of cheese it is, but the texture and look of it kind of grosses me out because it is like a blob of white. It was okay though because after class a group of us from class went to a coffee shop, where I got a vanilla latte and blueberry cheesecake. It was amazing. :) And one thing I noticed is that their sugar packets here are huge. Two sugar packets here equal about 5 or 6 sugar packets in the states. No lie. Many other things are smaller here but I guess Brazilians really like their sugar and sweet things.
Tomorrow, I do not have much planned. I need to get a copy of my passport and get it notarized, and then I need to get 2 photos taken for the police station registration thing. Then, I have class and I may check out some stores tomorrow. There is this street called walking street and it is just lined with many upon many stores and some restaurants. It is near my Portuguese class. I want to buy a purse and some shirts as well as souvenirs. :)
This is all for now. Until next time... Tchau tchau! (bye bye)
