So, we're taking it pretty easy today since Aaron is not feeling his best. We slept in and wandered a block from the hotel to the city center and lounged over coffee before deciding what to do for the day. They have a neat tourist bus system that circles the main tourism sites in town that you can pay one price for the day and get on and off wherever you want. But it doesn't go to Cholula which is on the top of our list so we got a taxi from the hotel and headed out to the buried pyramid and church.
Once there, we hired a guide who "spoke English" to explain the history of the construction, discovery and excavation of this buried pyramid. Turns out he is 88 years old and has lived in Cholula his whole life. The pyramid was buried back when Cortez arrived in Mexico and the natives wanted to hide it from him. At that time the conquistadors had a church built on top of this "hill" at the center of Cholula. It was discovered in the late 1920's and the excavation took place from 1931 to 1961. They basically stopped because the funding ran out. Our guide has been giving tours since he was 17. After navigating the tunnels under the hill and viewing the excavated areas outside we hiked up the hill to the cathedral. The view from the top (60 meters up) was stunning and we were able to see almost all the 364 other churches spread across the city.
After wandering around the city center of Cholula and relaxing with more coffee we took a bus back to Puebla and Aaron's favorite taqueria, La Suprema Salsa. Oh my gosh, the taco ingredients are just amazingly delicious. You all have to come down just to experience this food. The specialty meat for this taco is called "al Pastor" and it involves sliced and marinated meat roasted on a spit and carved as it's roasted. Soooo delicious!
Now we're taking a siesta at the hotel getting ready to explore later this evening.
Buenas Tardes! =) Sarah (and Aaron)
