Hath been many moons so I updated the blog. I felt as though it were time to share recent development, or lack therof. The hunt continues to for a job that lies in a good position career wise etc. I am still kayaking and doing the rental business. Many long days in the sun has been good to me lately. I have been able to get a lot of hours recently which is a good thing for me. Though it's not gonna fund my retirement I suppose there are a lot worse things then getting paid to be on the beach all summer giving intro kayak lessons (and paddleboarding).
When I first came to Chicago I was a little bit embaressed about my accent and my good friends at Red Frog Events made damn sure they pointed it out to me frequently. It was a funny thing though and I have grown to be quite proud of it. When people asked me where I was from I cringed a bit and said Arkansas and waited for the goat and cousin jokes to get over with so I could continue on with my life. However recently I have been geting much different reactions. Upon giving Chicagoians and tourist a quick kayaking lesson it only takes me about 3 sentences in for them to say..."Derek, where are you from?" I always reply "born and raised in Chicago why do you ask?" I get a bit of laughter from this and then I tell them "Arkansas!" Nice and proud like ya see. MOST people from Arkansas (except the ones that moved there from Chicago) are extremly nice people! I know this seems like a joke but where I am from you can always tell the ones that moved from up North. While they may be pleasant they are very demanding, loud, and impatient. So it is a bit of a joke in the hills that you can always point out a Yankee as it were. Anyway, I am at a place where I am proud to be from the Natural State. It is beautiful, undeveloped, and there is a lot of diversity within its' borders. Here lately I have been asked why in the hell did you leave Arkansas to come here?! I came for an internship; I stayed for the woman, has become a common motto of mine. So instead of being a hillbilly outcast I am perhaps somewhat of a novelty. The ultra rare Arkansawyen rarely seen out of its' natural environment.
Alas friends, the job hunt I feel is going rough and well all at the same time. I have hardly gotten any calls from places I have applied, but the one place I did get an interview from was a position I was truly excited about and want. It is not seasonal work, it is in a good location (Elgin IL) and it is something I could excel in. I don't wanna say to much and jinx it though so I will stop there for now. As always there a million gears turning with lots of different plans, options, and possibilities.
