So by now we had been in the same clothes since arriving in the states, we needed something new to wear that would keep us warm, so the first day in San Fran was spent shopping. Adam got himself a razor, top and a coat. I got two pairs of jeans, a top/dress, cardigan type jacket and some boots in the Macys sale. We both loved it and saved a lot!! Once all the shopping was finished we made our way up an extremely steep hill to see what we could find. I cant get over how people manage to walk up and down the hills everyday…I see why the trams were put in motion.
We got back to the hostel and tried getting to sleep, we had to use earplugs as a man in our room snored incredibly loud, even with the ear plugs you could still hear him!! We were not impressed.
We decided to go to Alcatraz on the Sunday, rain coats at the ready as it was chucking it down so by the time we reached the dock we were soaked. We got onto the ferry and around 12 mins later we arrived on the island. They put on a 12 minute theatre presentation on the history of Alcatraz and how people assume the nation of the building was purely for detention of prisoners when really there was more to the island itself. Once the presentation was finished we made our way up to the cell blocks, where we were given an audio device in order to get a tour of the cells from non other than past wardens and prisoners of the Alcatraz. A in-depth adaptation of how the prison affected their lives. The day to day antics etc.
This audio took around an hour at the most and once completed we made our way back down towards the ferry, we stumbled across a few other spots and gift shops before heading back to San Fran. It was only 2pm ish so the day was still young, lol it was by this time chucking it down, our clothes were soaked through so getting dry seemed pointless. We looked around Fishermans whalf, briefly before deciding to walk back. Now this walk doesn’t take 5 mins! its more like 30 mins! kinda seemed like a life time!!! All we wanted was to be back at the hostel in a warm, dry place!
The next day was nice and dry so a much better day to see everything, I guess yesterdays outing was in keeping with the idea that Alcatraz is meant to be a rotten, gloomy place. So the weather aided to the overall atmosphere.
We walked and walked and walked today to get to the golden gate bridge. Now im now talking walking on flat surfaces, nah more like several extremely steep hills, absolutely knackering at times. Now Adam may feel this is an over exaggeration but it was tough lol hey ho exercise baby!! After a long day out and a stunning view of the golden gate bridge, which I might add tried to eat as per photograph lol made our way on a tram ride back to downtown. We couldn’t come to san Francisco and not ride on a tram. Was cool but bit pricey - see why people walk.
San Francisco is a place that was different to expectations, its bursting with people, there’s a mixture so you don’t get the same old types roaming the streets. Many homeless too which was of putting as they asked you for change, you feel bad but you cant help them as the money clearly would go for booze or drugs!! The hostel we stayed in was great, offering a free breakfast every morning, Adam and I would get a bagel or two each day as we never had lunch only dinner. Think the old taste buds are changing as in Santa Barbara I drank red wine and enjoyed it and here I tried peanut butter and jam, little sickly after a while but I think you should all try it, its yummyJ
