We left Burlington this morning and headed towards the White Mountains in New Hampshire. There are bad storms predicted for the area this afternoon, so we headed out early (for us) to try to make it to our destination before the storms roll in. The trip today is only 111 miles, but it's mainly on byways and it will take longer than it would if it was on a highway. But this is what is all about, really seeing the country outside of the interstates.
On our way in Waterbury, VT is the Ben & Jerry's Factory and of course we had to make a pit stop for the factory tour.
We learned about the history of the company. Got a peek at the factory and the ice cream making process, got a taste of a flavor and after all that, of course we had to treat ourselves to our own choice. On the premises there is a graveyard where all the retired flavors are remembered. Kati noticed Peanut Butter & Jelly's stone was being dug out since that flavor is back in the stores now.
We drove the rest of the way, passing through some small Vermont towns, even the capital city is so small we had a hard time finding a place to stop to eat. We had to stop at a gas station to use their parking lot to eat. We did not need gas at that point, so we bought some soda to thank them for the spot.
We arrived at our campground early, settled in fast - we really have the hang on this and with many hands to help, we are done in no time. The campground is small but sites are large on grassy areas, some sites in the back are wooded and there is a river that runs along the back. They advertise you can go tubing, but the river is not deep enough for that, maybe because of the drought. We wanted to have dinner out, but we quickly found out the cafe across the street is only open on weekends and there is nothing else around. The nearest town with anything is about 20 minutes away - where we stopped at Walmart to get more drinking water.
I made tacos in a bag for dinner and we are enjoying our campfire tonight as I type this on my tablet. Tomorrow we will head to the highest peak in the North East.
