Today we have an easy 115 miles to get to our destination and we are going to sightsee along the way. I called the park this morning to check and they said everything is fine there after the storm. I am so glad we did not kill our plans. I am so looking forward to four nights at the beach!
We left the campground about 10AM and stopped at the next exit on highway 10 at Walmart to get supplies. It's a green Wal-Mart sign, not blue. As it turns out is just a supermarket. It was clean and nicely stocked.
We drove east of Mobile to the USS Alabama. We had lunch at the parking lot before going in. The ship is massive and it's really very impressive. We took about 3 hrs. to go through the whole ship. We did not have time to go through the submarine that is there. I thought we had to be in the campground by 5, so we decided we needed to leave. We ended up getting to the State Park about 5:30 and I was worried. As it turns out they say the park closes at 5, but that is the headquarters side. The campground check-in office never closes. We could have arrived later.
Throughout this trip except for one night we have been done for the day by 7PM. This has turned out to be ideal. When we are done for the day between 5 and 7, it gives us plenty of time to have dinner, catch up with anything we want to do on our own and then do something together or go to bed early if I am exhausted from the day's activities. I get wiped out sometimes like a little kid.
We are at Gulf State park and I am so excited to be here. White sand beach, pool, bike path, nature and activity center, and a town nearby.
