We said good bye to Nashville early (for us) this morning - we were pulling out of the park at 9:30 as the first shuttle was arriving. We do not have a destination today, but a journey. After all they say it's about the journey not the destination.
We headed out to find the northern terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway about half an hour from where we are on the southern side of Nashville. The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444 mile long National Parkway (in the National Park System) that travels through three states - TN, AL MS. There are many natural and historic sites along the way. We have a loose plan to explore the parkway in 4 days.
Today we saw the Nation's first concrete double arch bridge at Birdsong Hollow, the Gordon House Historic Site. I wanted to hike to Jackson Falls, but Gil was not feeling well and I did not want to do the 1.5 mile by myself. We did stop at Fall Hollow trail and saw that waterfall.
We stopped at the Meriwether Lewis Visitor Center. There is a nice informational display, a monument at the grave site and we were able to walk a short trail on the Old Natchez Trace. There is a campground here and it was an option for us to end up here today. However, since we did not hike the falls is early enough for us to keep going.
We drove to Glenrock Branch and then checked out Rock Springs which is at mile marker 330.
At this point we were tired for the day and past the point I thought we would be on the first day. We ended up traveling about 130 miles on the Trace. We accumulated a long list of needed items and decided to head to dinner and Wal-Mart in Tuscumbia. We passed a few campgrounds on route 72 and reserved a site in one of them for the night. After dinner and shopping we arrived at the CG around 7:45 and called it a night.
Tomorrow we continue to exploring the parkway.
