We arrived yesterday and after settling in I made dinner and we spend the rest of the evening relaxing. We watched a movie and then called it a night.
Friday - After breakfast we got our bikes out and went to check the campground activities headquarters. There is a well-stocked camp store and a laundry room sharing a pavilion in the center with picnic tables. We played a game of corn hole in which I beat Gil 4 to 3. I was in the lead for most of the game.
The park has an extensive well maintained bike trail system and you can rent bikes right at the camp store. There is also a Nature Center and amphitheater. The Nature center is home to baby alligators, turtles, snakes, and owls. I wanted to check the park schedule, but there was not much going on during the weekend. Just a couple of sessions to pet some animals - great for the little kids. There is a large pool and also basketball, tennis and pickleball court. The facilities here are great!
We returned to the RV to have lunch and then got ready to head out to the beach. We rode our bikes across the highway on the overpass to the Pavilion. There are restrooms facilities, but the concession stand is closed. I read you can rent chairs and umbrella but I could not find a stand for it.
We do not want to bake in the sun so we decided we were going to take a dip and then head back. Gil proposed we could hang out in the pavilion, but that is not very comfortable. After putting down my towel to set everything on, I noticed there was a guy setting up chairs and umbrellas. I walked over and talked to him, he instructed me to call the office and set up the rental. The call went to voice mail and instructed callers to speak to the attendants to rent the equipment, so I left a confused voice mail. I walked back to him and as I got there he was getting paged over the CV radio asking why he directed me to call the office instead of renting me the equipment-hmm. We rented the equipment for two days and got our umbrella and chairs set up.
We enjoyed the shore for several hours. We went in the water several times, Gil took a nap, walked on the shore and read. The umbrella rental was until 5. We left but no one had come to take them down. We went back to the RV, had dinner and then went over to try to play pickleball. It was still very hot at almost 7:30 PM and the sun was going down, so we did not play for very long.
We forgot to reapply sunscreen after we got to the beach and removed our clothing. Needless to say we were pretty burned in some spots. Nothing that a little sunburn gel could not help.
Saturday - IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!! Wow I am spending my birthday at the beach- I could not ask for a better way to celebrate. We woke up and after breakfast I thought we would ride our bikes around, but I headed outside and it was really hot already - 9:30AM. I went back inside, we changed into bathing suits and we headed out to the beach instead.
Our chairs were still set up so we got settled and headed into the water. After being in the water for a while, we were informed there was a shark in the water headed for us. We got out of the water quickly and then I stayed on the shore watching the shark pace back and forth for a while. We also saw a pod of dolphins. I guess there is a first time for everything, so many years going to the beach so often and had never run into a shark. After an hour or so everyone was back in the water, so I convinced Gil to go back. Gil figured we could get lunch delivered to the Pavilion, so we ordered and had lunch right on the sand. We were at the beach until 5PM when the guy came to take back the chairs.
We went back to the RV and took a shuttle service to go to a restaurant for dinner. The place was rated high, however the food was not that good. We walked over to Dairy Queen and had ice cream as a consolation price. We could not get a hold of the shuttle service for the return and I tried Ubber instead. We used the shuttle because they were advertising the ride for $7 - they forgot to make note of the multiplier. Talk about false advertising. Ubber turned out to be cheaper.
Sunday - Gil has been very gracious to hang out with me at the beach two days in a row, so I was not going to push my luck and ask for a third. I told him today we would do whatever he wanted. He chose to go see the football game. The shuttle driver mentioned a place yesterday so Gil looked it up and they have TVs. We got ready and got Ubber to take us to "The Hangout". It's a really cool place right on the shore. It looks like it would be really busy during peak season. They have an open air restaurant/bar surrounded by a plaza where it looks like games/activities/music are hosted. He watched the game and ate lunch. After that we walked around a bit and did some shopping for souvenirs. We then got an Ubber back to the RV. We got some things ready this evening to leave early in the morning. We have a long drive tomorrow and we do have to get in before 5PM.
