Zoe and Ed's Travels
We are in Nong Khai, a town in the north-east of Thailand on the Mekong river. On the other side of the river is Laos, where we are heading tomorrow morning. We came up to Nong Khai on the bus from Bangkok, with a stop for one day in a town called Nakhon Ratchasima (or Khorat). We managed to arrive in town during a large festival, and so there were fireworks and lots of stalls in the streets selling everything from fake watches to grilled insects. We bought neither. We did an excursion to a Khmer temple ruin at a place called Phimai, which is around an hour from Khorat on the bus. The temple was moderately interesting - people have told us that it's the best Khmer temple in Thailand, but nothing like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which we unfortunately haven't time to see.
It is exceedingly hot in Thailand at the moment, and we are glad of anywhere we can find air-conditioning (because we're too stingey to pay for a room with it!): it's amazing how long you can spend perusing things in a 7-eleven!
This evening we did a sunset cruise on the Mekong river, which was very relaxing. We got a good close-up view of a chedi (part of a temple) which has slid into the river (and now resides somewhere near the middle) and is only visible during the dry season when the water level falls.
