Zoe and Ed's Travels
Hello!
We are weary after a couple of days of sight-seeing in and around Beijing. On Tuesday we went to the Forbidden City, and spent several hours looking round the various palaces and gardens. On Wednesday we went to the Summer Palace, which was the summer retreat of the royal family, on the outskirts of Beijing. It's a large park containing an enormous lake. It is very picturesque, with bridges and pagodas and other pretty buildings on the lakeshore and islands. Today we have been to the Great Wall. It took quite a long time to get there and back, as it's around 50 miles north of Beijing. It was worth it though: it was misty which only served to increase the beauty of the setting. Also, we seemed to managed to avoid most of the tourists - not sure exactly how, but we're definitely not complaining.
We're heading off to Datong tomorrow evening - another overnight train. In Datong we are hoping to see the Cloud Ridge Caves, which are a series of caves in the hills full of carved Buddhas and other statues. It's supposed to be well worth a trip. We'll report back...
We have enjoyed Beijing, and have had loads of good food. However, we have managed to spend rather more money than we intended, so in that sense it might be the right time to move on!
