Zoe and Ed's Travels
Hi,
We got an overnight train to Datong last night. We could only get a hard sleeper ticket, which meant there were 6 beds to each comparment and no door. Still apart from being woken up several times for the attendant mopping the floor (eg at 3 in the morning) it was fine. It was quite sad to be leaving Beijing as we had enjoyed it there. Datong has the Cloud Ridge Caves which we visited this morning. They are fifth century caves carved out of the rock containing huge carvings of Buddhas and pagodas. They are really impressive. After the international feel of Beijing this town feels much more Chinese. I don't think we will be eating as much sushi here! We had breakfast at a small cafe where they cooked out on the street, shaving noodles off a lump of dough straight into the hot water. We have managed to get the local buses around town and avoided the expensive tours - Ed's Chinese is coming in useful. Tomorrow we are going to get the bus to Pingyao which is a walled city and spend a day or two before heading on to Xian to see the terracotta army.
