Zak and Mel's Excellent Adventure
The day after we had our surf lesson in Agnes Water we both felt inspired and hired a surf board and they are the photos you can see on our website, both making slow progress. The following morning we set off early (7am) to Fitzroy Reef Lagoon on the Outer Barrier Reef for a dive and snorkel, etc. This lagoon is one of the southern most points where you can access the reef and its gained a reputation for having very colourful coral so we were both looking forward to it. After 2 1/2 hour fairly rough journey out to the reef we did an hour long snorkel where we saw some more amazing the coral lived up to expectations. We were due to dive in the afternoon but due to a mechanical failure on one of the boats this was cancelled. Mel still got to go down for a quick taster dive with the dive master but we were disappointed that having made the trip it hadn't come off. Four people also got stung by jellyfish whilst snorkelling so we had to be on the look out for those too!! That night we drove down to Hervey Bay for a trip to Fraser Island. We had another early morning start this time up at 5.30am, but as we snuck into a campsite the previous evening we at least saved a few bucks! After driving around picking up everyone we got a ferry to Fraser Island about 8.30am. We then had two days and a night on the island, which took us to all of the main attractions (Lake MacKenzie, Indian Heads, etc). We bombed about in a 4WD as the island is made up of sand so you can't take a normal car over. Our guide Jason took us to an Aboriginal settlement although you wouldn't know they were abo's as he was donning a Diesel tshirt - not very authentic! But it was here that we were able to feed some dingo's. Which is actually illegal and incurs a 3k fine (so don't tell anyone!). Due to another bed bugs incident (am sure we told you about the Whitsunday one!) this time not in our room, we had to sleep outside. We ended up with four more people in our room (totally 8!!) The place was so hot it was unreal so we opted to sleep out with the dingoes it was that bad! Was a bit scary waking up with a dingo at the end of your mattress! We then drove to Noosa that night which has a reputation for being one of the nicest places on the East Coast. It's quite swanky and potentially a bit pretentious in places but we both really loved it - the natural beauty is awesome both in the hills surrounding Noosa and on the beaches. Watching everyone surfing we both decided to hire boards again and had a good afternoon surfing (well we tried!). The following day Zak couldn't wait any longer (he's not known for his patience) and he went out and bought a 7ft 4" Mini Mal board. The following morning he had a quick surf while Mel did a walk through the National Park at Noosa Heads. Then we set off down the Sunshine Coast for a whistle stop tour of the rest of the smaller towns along the coast. We headed inland to see Australia Zoo and the Glasshouse Mountains which were both very good. Highlights were a 7m reticulated python eating a whole goat (unreal!!), feeding piglets and the view from Mt Nguagua. Lowlights - no Steve Irwin and by crikey was it expensive! Next stop Brisbane - rubbish, just like any city but hotter. Next stop Gold Coast - rubbish, just like Blackpool/Benidorm but hotter. So that was the end of Queensland - The Sunshine State. Next....New South Wales. See you there. xxxxx
