Zak and Mel's Excellent Adventure
Hi everyone, just to fill you in on our latest moves. After leaving the cafe in the national park, we headed to a bat sanctuary in Cape Trib. We got to meet a very cute fruit bat whose name escapes us. He was very friendly and inquisitive and we made him very excited at one point where he proceeded to show off his equipment!! We then headed back down to Cairns where we planned to go diving but enroute we had over 300mm of rain so we had second thoughts. We're planning on still going diving but further down the coast. Heading on from Cairns we went to Mission Beach which we both loved. It's a really laid back, hippiesville town. We stayed here for 2nights and went over to Dunk Island on the 2nd day. We took our snorkel kits and rented stinger suits over there. We saw some amazing fish including a baracuda, a ray and heaps of really colourful ones which we don't know the names of! We left Mission Beach heading for Townsville. On the way we drove to Wallaman Falls the highest in Oz. Very impressive but more to our concern at that point was whether we would make it out of the bush. An hour previously Mel had asked Zak if we had enough petrol to make this detour and he had assured her 'yeah, we'll be fine.' On the way up to the falls the red petrol light started to come on!! We were now 50k+ from anywhere so after a somewhat heated debate we decided to push on and try to get to the falls. Well we made it and lucky we made it back too - but we had to free wheel down most of the way. We drove on to Townsville where we stayed for 2nights and spent one day on Magnetic Island (aka Maggie) which was absolutely beaut! We hired a Mini Moke for the day and wizzed about in that, ignoring the smirks from passers by as we sped past in a bright pink moke! We snorkeled again here with stinger suits but still both of us got stung by blue bottles (portguese man of war). The lifeguard warned us that they were out there but that their stings are not that bad. So we went for it! Leaving Townsville the next day we went to the Billabong Sanctuary and got the chance to hold loads of animals (koala's, snakes, crocs - see the photos). We also nearly got more than we bargained for when the park guide was feeding a croc called Psycho, he slipped over backwards and Psycho nearly got a very big meal. It was a heart in the mouth moment for us and something else in the pants moment for him! But all's well that ends well. We arrived in Airlie Beach later Mon night and have been chilling out here since. We're off on a sailing cruise for 3 days in about 1hour on the Whitsundays Magic which we'll tell you about later. Hope you are all well. Love us. xxxxx
