Zak and Mel's Excellent Adventure
So we left Adelaide on Tuesday and continued our road trip. We headed around the Fleurieu Peninsula which reminded us both of Blenheim in NZ as it is also a wine growing region and the surrounds were very similar. We drove to Cape Jervis where you could look across to Kangaroo Island - you could take a ferry across but we couldn't be bothered so we just looked and then headed on!!! We headed on to a beach called Christie's beach to check out the surf. When we arrived it looked pretty flat and unappealing, even more so when we spotted a dorsel fin in the wave!!! Aaaaah! Luckily it wasn't a shark it was a couple of dolphins surfing the waves, much to our relief! We still drove on though! Our final stop for the day was Meningie, a small town on a lake where we camped up. The next day, we did - guess what?!? - more driving! We drove through some sweet little towns (well more like english villages - old stone buildings and english roses). We stayed at Robe for a surf and then headed to Mount Gambier to stay the night. This town is built at the base of a series of volcanic craters. Some of these craters are now lakes and Blue Lake is just like looking in a mirror. It was amazing. Our next stop, after driving through more towns (Port Fairy was a nice spot) was Warrnambool. We found a great surf break and Zak had great fun on his board for the rest of the day. Yesterday morning was spent down the beach again and Mel managed to get knocked over by a large wave and lost one of her fins. Doh! Not a happy bunny at all! So whilst sulkinig on the beach she spotted a very cute puppy (only 6 wks old!) and got chatting to the owner - a guy it transpired who is known as 'Stretch' - we suspected it was because he had done a stretch in prison. Without being judgemental he was a bit of a dodgy character and Mel was hoping Zak would get out of the surf quick. An hour later he was still chatting to Mel about Melbourne and where to go and not go. All very well, thanks very much but then when we were getting our stuff ready to go he came up with the brilliant idea of catching a lift with us! Brilliant! We now had a strange bloke, his dog and us in the van - how did this happen?? Anyway, we managed to shake him off much to our relief and headed on to the much talked about, Great Ocean Road. Having stopped at all the key spots - Twelve Apostles, London Bridge, The Arch, etc, etc ,etc we stayed last night at Princetown. Today we are in Apollo Bay where we planned to spend the day on the beach (Zak surfing, Mel chilling) but on Zak's first wave he got smashed into the sea bed, face first. So we've come to do this postcard instead. Thanks Zak!!!! We're off to finish the Gt Ocean Rd tomorrow and then on to Melbourne. We'll be there on Weds for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games so we might see if we can get tickets. Love to you all. Mel and Zak xxxxxx
