Zak and Mel's Excellent Adventure
Hi everyone. Hope you are all good and its not too cold for you all! Since we last wrote we finished the rest of the Great Ocean Road. After we moved on from Apollo Bay we headed to Jan Juc about 5km south of Torquay. The weather was amazing that day - they reckoned about 36 degrees! It was pretty muggy though and as expected the heat was followed during the night with a massive storm! Luckily we were in the van but we did feel for all the families who were camping in tents!! The whole drive from Apollo Bay to about Torquay is great - lots of little beach towns, good surf and a great drive all in all. Mel got some new flippers, after the fiasco of losing hers and managed to catch her best wave yet. She rode across the wave like a pro - we'll try and get some vidoe evidence for you. Hopefully it wasn't a fluke! We then headed into Melbourne and were lucky to book into a campsite for 4 nts - some people had booked 18 mths in advance cos of the Commonwealth Games! We stayed up in a northern suburb called Coburg and got the trams (yes trams!!) into the city each day. We loved the area Fitzroy which is really funky - lots of cool bars, a great veggie restaurant and generally a cool place. I would compare to something like Greenwich Village in New York but maybe a bit rougher round the edges! We did the tourist stuff in Melbourne - went up the Rialto Tower where you can get to see over the whole of Melbourne from the 55th floor. Went to the old gaol (jail) where Ned Kelly was hung, went to St Kilda and of course we did the Neighbours tour! Well, we couldn't miss that! It's actually called Pin Oak St, not Ramsay St and we had a hilarious guide who cheesed the whole thing up and knew absolutely everything about Neighbours!! We got to see the opening ceremony of the games at Federation Sq which right in the city and is all pedestrianised and had a big screen showing all the tv coverage. On Thurs we got tickets to see the Rugby 7's and got to see England beat Australia in the last game of the night which was very funny! We gave them a lot of stick and after a few too many schooners of beer, had a great laugh with some Aussie's. Our evening seats were 3 rows back and right next to the other athletes, so needless to say we had lots of fun and Mel just had to get the autographs from the Ugandan team (whatever!! lay off the beers i reckon!) Since leaving Melbourne we have been doing more driving - which it has to be said we are getting pretty bored of! It's very nice to see lots of places but sometimes it'd just be good to relax for a while! So here we are now in Thredbo. We're gonna stay for 4 days and we've checked into a nice hotel to give ourselves a break from the van (which incidentally, decided to pack up on us. The gearbox went, so the rental company have now got a new van to us). Zak is booked onto the World DH course - 'The Cannonball Run' tomorrow and Mel is doing a walk in the morning and then having various massages, pedicure and facial. We'll let you know how it all goes....love to you all. We are missing you all and we do miss home. No matter how wonderful Oz is, you can't beat the feeling of being at home! Love Mel and Zak xxxxx (PS - photos to follow soon, we promise!)
