Wow it's only 10:15 am and I'm roasting in this sun. Yesterday and today are the first days around 80 degrees. I haven't had much time to blog lately we have been extremely busy learning more about the island of Lesvos and the city of Mytilini.
It's hard to remember everything that we've done since my last entry but I'll do my best. On Friday we woke up bright and early as per usual and had to take the bus to a museum all by our self : / It was a good thing we had Sara who got directions from a nice Greek girl from the University of Aegean (which in case you don't know, is the sea that I'm living off of. AND it's absolutely beautiful.) She kindly directed us to the place we needed to get off at and then the next bus we needed to catch. I myself just sat back and let Sara take care of it.
The bus ride was extremely cramped and HOT! Probably because there was an extra 23 American girls occupying it. hahaha. I haven't quite gotten used to all the staring here. But I guess it's a part of their culture and it should be taken as a compliment. Still, IT'S WIERD!
We actually arrived to the museum only 10 minutes late. Which in Greece, that's early! The first museum was really cool. The artist was a bit of a drunk and not formally educated but since he traveled around Europe so much actually had a lot of knowledge. I took lots of pictures of his artwork. He drew things how he interpreted the world or how he imagined it was or should be, or maybe one day would be. Most of them looked like a 7th grader could draw them. But I think that's why I liked it so much.
The next museum was of Thiad's artist that he featured in his magazines. There were a lot of really cool painting and a lot of... strange painting. But, that's nothing different from any other art gallery I suppose. haha.
My favorite stop that we made and possibly my favorite part of the whole trip so far was at a family run pottery place. Sofia, our instructor, is very good friends with the owners and they showed us around how the pots were made and then, we got to make and paint our very own pottery! I'm a natural at the molding of the clay. NOT! I'm not really sure what you would call the thing that I made. It's in between a double shot glass or a flower vase but it is cricked and uneven. ROTFL (=rolling on the floor laughing). I think I'll stick to just the painting portion. I was very happy with the way my decorating of an already made pot was made :)
From there we went grocery shopping. The funniest thing happened while we were there. Besides ordering 14 slices of turkey haha, we tried to get a little bit of lettuce as well. My roommate, Tiana, and I didn't want a huge head of lettuce so we attempted to rip a little bit off. When we went to price the lettuce with the lady she held at us that we had to take "THE WHOLE THING!" So she went to the lettuce and got us "the whole thing" however she dropped a piece or two of it on the ground and with out thinking twice picked it up and stuffed it right into our bag! hahahahahahaha YUCK! that would never happen in the states. I still chuckle about it every time I go to use our lettuce. She had to be thinking "Ugh, stupid americans!" lol.
Anyway we had the rest of the evening to ourself and after laying out and enjoying the weather we all went to Mytilini for our first night at a bar here, the Monkey Bar. It is definitely weird being the oldest girl on the trip and only 1 of 5 who is older than 21 and have been to bars... I think some were a little too excited for our first night out. All in all it was a blast and they make their drinks VERY strong! Whoa! The Greeks don't dance the same way as we do in the states. They are much more reserved and they think the way we dance is slutty. Which, most of the time it is. They more or less bounce by themselves in a group and NEVER with each other like we do. It was definitely new. It reminded me of my first 6th grade dance.
On Saturday we woke up early once again to do some community service and clear the sides of the streets so that ourselves and others can walk along them more easily. It was pretty tough work. Then once again we had the rest of the day to ourselves.
We met some Italian boys who are here in an exchange program and also some French boys here for the same reason. They asked if we wanted to play soccer but none of us were interested. Instead, we suggested volleyball and had a huge circle of us Americans, the French boys and the Italians. All of us could speak english to comunitcate and I thought that was awesome. However, I do which that I was able to speak more than one language. I feel like the cliché dumb American who only knows english. I tried to speak some spanish too so they didn't think I was that dumb, but they knew that too! Maybe not fluently but just about as much as me! I guess for them it is more of a need to required different languages since they are so close to so many other countries who all speak their own language. That is not the case for us since we are so isolated from anyone but Mexico and Canada. Canada speaks english too though.
Later a couple of us girls went to play some basketball with the french boys and it got brutal! None of us are very good but that is what made it so fun. We played for about an hours and a half. I don't think I've ran so much since my soccer days back in middle school :/
That night, The French boys an a handful of us girls went to a local bar. We bombarded them with questions about how to say swear words and fun phrases. I forget the whole phrase but something about beu san, means beautiful boobs. haha. There were much more inappropriate things said but I remember very little. It was a great night.
Lastly, yesterday, as in Sunday, we went out on a boat all day. we went to a beach in southern Lesvos and were told that we were drinking oyzo wrong. Hahaha! Apparently they only drink it with seafood. We had lunch at the beach and I can honestly say that was the first meal that I didn't like very much. Possibly because it was very hot and I was not very hungry.
Throughout the day girls were realizing how sunburned they were. I'm mad because I didn't get any color at all! just more freckles. I didn't burn nor tan! Goodness I should just be a redhead and deal with it!
Anyways. These past couple days were amazing and I don't think that even heaven could be any better than this.
Phrase of the day: poo ene bano; = where is the bathroom?

Aunt Mary Go Sam! what an opportunity you are enjoying for all of us that can't be there-I am very jealous.
