Our journey to Cambodia...
Setting off from Bangkok we thought we were embarking on a 10 hour journey to Siem Reap in Cambodia...how wrong we were!!! The journey to the border seemed to go as planned though we wouldn't recommend sitting at the front of a bus in Asia, it was a hell of a lot more terrifying than any roller coaster we've ever been on!! The rule of the road is whoever is biggest tends to get right of way! But when you are hurtling down a road full of pot holes head on towards a 10 ton truck you kind of wish you didn't have right of way at all!!!!
After crossing the border without any problems, the fun began...
We were expecting to be picked up by pick up trucks to take us the rest of the way which was about 4-5 hours. After sitting and waiting for about 2 hours we kind of figured they wouldn't be coming. Eventually our tour guide managed to get us onto a bus which would take us,we also heard that the roads might be a bit wet from heavy rain so maybe the bus was the better choice anyway. We don't know quite how to describe the road, or even if you could call it a road! The pot holes were the size of small ponds, we never really got above 20 mile an hour, thank goodness because I think the bus would have toppled over if we did! To be honest though, you kind of got used to it after a while.
As we were driving along we began to wonder where the wet parts of the road were...that was until we reached a point where a truck was stuck in the middle of the road in water so deep it was nearlly past the top of the wheels! We suddenly began to panic and wondered how we would get across in our bus. One local guy walked through the water to see how deep it was and it went right up to his neck!! So the panic really started to set in when we were all told to get off the bus,we were going across seperatly to the bus! The locals were out in force, I think it was quite exciting for them and a bit of a money making opportunity too. They turned up with these little wooden boats (looking a bit worse for wear I have to say!) and said they would take us over the water! So there we were piled into these little boats sailing across the road in the pitch black in some remote part of Cambodia!!!!! We all managed to get across and somehow our bus managed to follow and we got back on our way. We all breathed a sigh of relief and weren't too worried about the shallow rivers we were driving through along the way, until we were driving through one of them and promply got stuck in the middle!!!!! We were sat there thinking,"it's ok,surely we'll start to move in a minute!". But,we didn't...we had to get out and wade through the water, it was terrible, we were soaking and covered in mud,and I was convinced we were going to be eaten by crocodiles or something!!! We had to wait about an hour on the other side while a tractor looking vehicle pulled the bus out to meet us!!!
So,18 hours later, at about midnight, having not had any lunch or dinner, we arrived in Siem Reap,Cambodia!!
