Queenstown
The next day we set off towards the adrenaline capital of Queenstown, after a good long day of driving…….again!! we finally arrived and were pleasantly greeted by a town full of log cabin houses situated in a valley of high peak mountains with a huge gondola stretching far up the side, Queenstown was also set around deep crystal clear water lakes, it was just beautiful, it had that French snow chalet feel to it, we thought we were in the rockys!! We set up camp on our first official camp site, it was full of campers, very central and situated just below the skyline gondola. We took a short walk into the town to find a number of small shops and info centers all based around the skiing and adrenaline activities in the area, we got a few bits and bobs from the supermarket and headed to the internet café to update our blog & catch up on a any news from home, from here we returned to our camper, excited as we were now hooked up to electric so could turn on our heater full power!! Needless to say we had a nice snug sleep that night!
The following day we woke early ready for our adrenaline filled day, we walked into town to our pickup point for the Shotover Jet, we got onto the courtesy bus that took us to the Shotover River, from there we were given life jackets, rain Mac's and posed for photos!. Next we boarded the boat, it was a speed boat with a flat bottom which enabled the boat to do sharp turns, it only need 3 inches of water to stay afloat, it was fitted with a twin engines that had over 500 break horse power that would take the boat into the turquoise waters of the Shotover River at speeds of up to 80 miles an hour, we had so much fun, it was scary because it would do complete 360 degree turns in the crevices of a river canyon…it was just so cool…. we set off up the river at high speeds weaving in and out of rocks and logs with the water spraying all over us, whilst every few minutes doing a 360 degree turn, we stopped half way up the river where by sexy Shane (the driver….lol ) explained all about the boat and the surroundings, then within no time we were shot back up the river…..what an experience!!!!! We just had to get the pics for our memories……
Full of adrenaline and thirsty for more we got back into town and headed straight for the skyline gondola which took us to the top of the mountain overlooking the town, at the top we went on the Luge, it was kind like a toboggan run where your given a three wheeled cart which you steered like bike through a windy fast track through to a finish line, there they took your pics, of course we were like two big kids!….but we weren't on our own! We firstly did the scenic track to get used to the Luge….. they were quite fast and it makes it worse when your racing one another, next we were allowed to attempt the fast track, it was full of sharp corners and high speed humps…all of this on the side of a snow capped mountain with stunning views of the lake and town below…..it's soooo much fun we need one of these at home! After all this excitement we went for a jog…& Donzy headed for the supermarket to pick up a bottle of wine on the way back we just fancied a few drinks tonight. They asked Donzy for I.D so she ran all the way back to the camp to get her drivers license & headed back to get the wine….but when taking the same bottle back to the till they said that they wouldn't accept it, so stressed out she headed back to the camp again arriving only to find Lucy shouting
"Am I glad to see you" whilst stood in the shower in the buff, hair full of shampoo and nearly hypothermic….we'd only ran out of water…….something our campers notorious for!! So after filling up hot water bottles for Lucy to finish her shower & topping up the water tank Lucy ran back down to get the wine….. ironically not getting ID'd!! We finally sat down and chilled out & after a couple headed to a bar where we bought another! & had a game of pool sitting next to the real log wood burning fire. All warmed up we stumbled out of the bar and headed for the reputable FergBurger! This was a famous and much recommended place (by everyone we met on our travels who had visited Queenstown!!) to get a burger and boy…it was worth it they were the best…. real fresh & you could get anything in them…. vegetarian or not….. All full up we stumbled back to the van and crashed for the night.
