Injuries, accidents, general stupidity and miscellany.
Tripped over a bench in Auckland city centre, resulting in a badly bruised shin. Actually went right over it, I was busy with the camera at the time.
Livened things up having mistakenly entered 'men's' showers on one camp site, and 'dripped dried' having forgotten my towel, at another.
Tripped over a post on the ferry. Threw my arms out instinctively and smacked some chap hard on the back. Narrowly avoided losing his camera over the side! Have just seen said bloke at the restaurant, here in Franz Josef. He kind of grimaced.
Went to the Spa here on the campsite in FJ and managed to lose my knickers somewhere between Spa and the van, only to find them this morning, hanging up on a peg, ceremoniously, for the world to see!
It could only have been slightly more embarrassing had the guy I slapped on the back found them!
I keep bumping into him! Have just seen him on the way to the glacier and again at the restaurant. His wife, (Argentinian), doesn't look particularly friendly and has been dressed in either Falke, Burberry or Prada every time I've seen her!
20/10/11
So, it's 6.30pm here and you guys will have another hour or so before your days starts. Ours is just coming to an end as we sit in the evening sunshine, with a glass of Salvare wine and drink in this amazing scenery.
The day started early for me as I was up and out for a run, down a dried up river bed, at 7.45am. I even managed to get lost in the rain forest briefly, but managed to navigate my way back to the camp site.
By the time I'd got back and showered, Ian had booked a flight in a helicopter, up and over the glaciers and around Mt. Cook.
I was slightly concerned that it might resemble Vietnam in the village, what with the distant buzz of helicopters and the potential for the smell of kerosene. It probably doesn't sit well with some environmentalists and green tourism advocates either. However, it provides jobs, is a valuable source of local income and is pretty bloody exciting, to boot! (Gosh, I'll be booking a package holiday next)
Conscious appeased, we buckled up and were soon flying up the Frans Josef glacier along the face of Mt Tasman. The views were exceptional as we dipped in and out over the scenic wonders of the area.
After 30 minutes, we landed on the snow, 6,000 feet above Fox Glacier for photo opportunities of the view, which extended way across the main divide and out to the Tasman sea.
Unfortunately, we couldn't fly around Mt Cook 12280 ft, as it was too windy!
Nevertheless, it was exceptional and altogether rather fantastic!
After lunch we headed off on our bikes up to the Glacier terminal and then walked to the bottom of the Frans Josef Glacier itself. Amazing! This was a geographer/geologists dream, I can tell you. What with all the rock formations, waterfalls, rocks and not to mention that huge chunk of ice itself, I was like a kid in a sweetshop and Ian made me empty my pockets of rocks and stones, before we left.
After a couple of pints in the bar and a catch up of the news, we headed back to the van and had a siesta.
Later this evening, Ian suddenly realised that we'd been together for 31 years! So, we drank to that! The next thing I know, whether from the shock or sheer delight of the above fact, he's on the floor, rolling about in agony. He'd stepped out of the van, landed in a gap in the ground and twisted his ankle!
The bad news was, I had to wash up, but far worse than that, I may now have to do all the driving!
It's been nice knowing you all....!
