The TranzAlpine is rated as one of the great train journeys of the world. It runs between Christchurch and the West Coast and I'm currently on it with Casey Jones.
Not particularly an 'active' pursuit, but standing on the open-air viewing platform, attempting to take photographs, was pretty exciting, especially when going through one of the tunnels.
Eight hours, 36 tunnels and 463 kilometres later, (with a stop) we returned to Christchurch and although the weather was not particularly good on the journey (first rainy day) the scenery was stunning!
We had a walk around Christchurch city centre when we got back, which was a very surreal experience, it resembled a scene from the film 'War of the World's. Buildings half left, big cracks in the road, windows blown out, demolition orders etc.
Destruction and disruption is very much evident throughout the suburbs and the CBD is still a 'no go' area. They are still experiencing aftershocks (three whilst we've been here) and don't envisage attempting any real structural work for the next 18 months. It's more a question of keeping things structurally safe. Surprisingly, the latest cost for the clean up is $30 million.
Christchurch is looking and feeling like a poor relation at the moment.
There is a slight feeling of resentment in respect of the RWC. Maybe they've missed out on the action and more importantly, the income from the tournament. Therefore, it was good that the ABs were doing a victory parade through the streets this afternoon.
Last supper in the van tonight, washed down with a rather agreeable 'Cloudy Bay'.

Packed up the van and gave it a sweep out. Will be strange sleeping in a bed tonight in Auckland. May have to get out and kip on the floor.
Airport bound now. Not feeling very humorous today as really and truly we are quite sad to be leaving the South Island today and then North Zealand proper, tomorrow. (27th).
