Yesterday we travelled from Auckland by hire car to the wonderfully named Mount Maunganui. The Mount is a big piece of rock attached to the mainland by a sandy peninsula. It makes a great holiday destination with almost 360 degree beaches. It's also where our friends Ade and Leanne live with there lovely children Maddie and Callum.
Today we took a well earned rest from travelling and spent the day by the seaside. After a leisurely breakfast we ambled up the mount, about 230 metres high. The shade from the ferns and trees made it a pleasant climb to the top. The views were superb quality, we spent a considerable amount of time watching a paraglider catch the thermals around the mount.
After such strenuous exercise we rewarded ourselves with spot of lunch and then we hit the beach. After carefully covering ourselves in sunblock we had refreshing dip in the sea. The waves are great fun and much enjoyed by surfers as well as swimmers like us. One wave took us by surprise and knocked off mike's glasses. The Eagle eyed Maddie rescued them from the sand below and earned herself an icecream.
Mike and I must have been the whitest on the beach as the locals have been enjoying a very sunny summer.
Our leisurely day at the seaside was followed by good food and company from Ade, Leanne, Maddie and Callum. Thank you for a wonderful welcome and hospitality.
