We left the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park to travel to the dramatic West coast. We retraced our route back to highway 6 which follows the way early settlers used and passes through a one street town Muchison. This former logging town has transformed itself into an adventure capital offering white water rafting and other thrill experiences. We stuck to sampling the coffee in one of the several coffee shops and very nice it was too.
Onwards down highway 6 through fantastic gorges and river valleys. These were the base for a former gold mining industry but all that is left is an old track used for walking and a plaque with some old picture of rough miners smoking pipes.
We found a fab campsite near West Port right next to the beach so after booking in we took a welcome dip in the sea. Well the afternoon temperature was 27 deg centigrade.
As we arrived in the early afternoon we also had time to take the one hour walk to the seal colony at Foulwind Point, so named by cpt cook because when he passed it the weather wasn't very nice. We were in luck and saw lots of seals lollopping around on the rocks.
At one point the ground seemed to move, no not an earthquake but blasting at the local coalmine.
We spent a happy evening making use of the camp site laundry and mike kindly let me off the ironing this time.
