Tortuguero is a remote village on the north east coast of costa rica only accessible by river and is surrounded by rainforests, on the boat ride there we saw some crocodiles. On the first night we did a turtle tour with two guides. One who was small and portly and dressed as lara croft who was scared of the sea and ran away every time a wave went near her and she tried to be at "one" with the turtles by walking like them, the other was our "english speaking" guide who spoke no english. We walked for about an hour along the beach and found nothing, then we had a tip off that there was a leatherback spotted near our hostel. Quicklly we turned around and cut into a side path behind the beach in our search for the turtle. Slowly the pace increased and in the final stretch lara croft started the sprint... or should i say the waddle. We found the leatherback which was HUGE and was covering the eggs with sand which her big flippers and spraying everyone watching us with sand! On the last day we got up at the crack of dawn and went on our canoe tour, god knows how the guide spotted some of the animals from like a mile away but he did. We got close up to some caimans, the jesus christ lizards which walk on water, iguanas, poisionous dart frogs, howler and spider monkeys and loads of different birds. We then went on our own journey into the rainforest....alone! we saw loads of monkeys again but i think we scared most of the wildlife off with all the noise we were making and will was trying to make his own nature videos of ants and me...unsuccessfully. We hired out a caone by ourselves later on and will managed to paddle us and more specifically me into a 2 metre long caiman and then decided to agitate it by splashing it with the oar! Probably the most reckless moment of the holiday so far. Then he decided to take us onto the rapids and nearly got us swept into the mangroves which would have capsized us. Luckily we survived to tell the tale! due to wills "expert" paddling manoevers! Later on we got ravaged by a rabid puppy which broke into our room and stole wills wallet. We only realised hed lost it when our french neighbours slipped a note under the door saying they had it after finding the culprit gnawing on it outside. Then at 5 in the morning will had to wake the frenchies up to get his wallet.
Can i just say that Will did help to write this blog but had a cat sleeping on his lap at the time so couldnt type......seems to be something about the animals in central america that make them attracted to me n my stuff including the mosquitoes which i think i may be alergic to cos i woke up one night all swolen looking like the hunch-back of notredam! btw does any1 know if i should be takin antihistamene for that? o ye n james forgot to mention his hissy fit when we ended up next to the caiman where he started cryin and demanded to go back!
