Stonehenge was the oldest thing we saw on this trip. Dating back 5000+ years (no joke) it is one of the wonders of the middle ages, because no one knows how prehistoric peoples moved such large stones (the stones were even bigger back then and the people smaller) 280 miles to this location, and erected them to create what they are now. Not only that, no one really knows what they're for. Us, being the renowned archeologists that we are, have come to a conclusion that they are indeed an ancient calendar, and have disputed the alien, merlin, satanic, and other theories. It is simply too coincidental that the sun shines through each arch on a certain day of each month, and that on the summer solstace, the sunshine hits the alter stone just perfectly!
The stones themselves weren't all that impressive, but the history was pretty awe-inspiring. The fact that the blue stones came from so far away without trucks or other tools is astounding.
Funny note: back in the 19th century, Stonehenge was already a tourist site, and for a small fee you could rent a hammer and take a piece of stonehenge home with you. They don't let you do that anymore. We tried.
