So, yesterday we went to our first NFL game. We were to see the Washington Redskins vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Based on my pregame reading of how the teams were travelling, I figured we were up for a bit of a hammering. We had to travel to Maryland on the Metro to get to FedEx Stadium...and walk and walk...they could learn something though from Perth about how to get people to take public transport to games. Emma and I got the 2nd or 3rd train to leave the station on the way back (and they're not big trains!) and there was no one on it!
Anyhow, the game was great. I was disappointed when it finished as I was just starting the get the hang of the rules! Our boys got off to a great start with a touchdown (see I did learn something!) but our punter was a bit wayward to begin with and he missed an easy shot from right in front 25 yards out. Tampa Bay though fought back and ended up leading by 7 points with 2 minutes to go. We managed to score another awesome touchdown and with 20 seconds on the clock, we fumbled, missed the extra point we could have got by kicking a goal (or however you say it in gridiron speak) and lost by a point!
It had however, rained for the entire time! And there is absolutely no shelter on any of the seating in the stadium (unless you have box seats) and we were sitting underneath where some of the lights were hung so were also getting the drips from there. By the end of the game, you could ring the water out of the sleeves of my jacket and I was wet all the way down to my thermals!! But the atmosphere was great and the stadium would have barely been half full so it would have been great on a big game day!
We were going to go to Georgetown last night but with all being a bit wet and cold, we passed and just came back to the hotel. By the way, have I mentioned how swish this hotel is?? There was a military function on the other night - all the guys in their dress uniforms, all their ladies in ball dresses. This hotel was where all the kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers and even an emperor stayed when attending JFK's funeral and apparently some of the Pelican Brief was also shot here...will have to rewatch that when I get home!
Anyhow, today we went to the National Zoo. Whilst it isn't a very big zoo, they have some amazing enclosures and are well set up. It was pretty quiet today (although a bit cold) so it was easy to see most of the animals. The cheetahs were out having a play (they have 3 cheetahs!) although one of the panda's was just curled up in a ball fast asleep! Brianna got to pat and feed a kiwi. The gorilla's were amazing - the silverback kept stealing all the others food until one of them kept running away and trying to stuff as much into her mouth as possible! They have a little baby too - so cute! We said G'day to the emu and wallaby's.
Afterwards, we headed to a little cafe place up the road and had an amazing meal (and $5 martini's!) and are now preparing for the trip to Orlando tomorrow....Harry Potter World, here we come! Oh, and Tara will be meeting up with us tomorrow too =)
