The game of horseshoes is taken very seriously here. People own their own set of horseshoes to play with and there are tournaments at local eateries. Thanks to our new neighbor in the RV Park, Dan, everyone in my family learned how to play horseshoes properly. It is not an easy game to master, but each of us seemed to get the hang of it eventually. Learning how to score the game is not complicated (like bowling). A player can earn points for pitching his/her shoe and having it land within six inches of the stake. Now I understand what the saying, "Close only counts in horseshoes" means.
Dan also showed us some true southern hospitality by cooking and bringing over a plate of chicken wings/drummettes. WOW! The entire family agreed that these were the best wings we had ever had (homemade or from a restaurant). Just the right amount of crunch and spice; not greasy at all. Dan's grandmother had passed down the recipe to him and was kind enough to share it with us : ) Sorry, but it is not my place to pass it along to the public. So as I think back about time spent in TN, I think of horseshoes & chicken wings.
