Fast forward to September 2010, I was invited to attend a State Farm certification class in Birmingham AL. Since my wife is African American, adopted by white civil rights activists in the early 60's, and since we are taking the year to travel with our children, we thought it would be an enriching experience for us. We were right.
I am of hispanic/irish decent, 50/50, smack down the middle. I had spent some time in the south while playing minor league baseball in the mid 80's, so I thought it would be an educational trip as well. We went to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, which was amazing/sad/informative, and I recommend every American check it out. We dined down the street at Mrs. B's, southern/soul food restaurant where you get the meat and 3, pick a meat and 3 side dishes. I got the fried chicken, collard greens, blackeyed peas, and mac-n-cheese. Very good , though the greens were a tad salty. How do they keep their figures around here? I could barely move after I was done.
We are now in TN, having zipped through LA. and MS. Too bad, I wanted to get to New Orleans, Baton Rouge. I am selling RV Resort, site guide ads. Played my first game of horse-shoes with my son, and Ron and Dan here at the park. They take their horse-shoes seriously around here. Getting a good dose of that southern hospitality.
That's it for now, until next time from who knows where. O yeah, for those interested, I passed my Sate Farm cert. with flying colors.
Till next time, George
