I arrived at Sacramento late on Monday night, courtesy of Southwest airlines. Sam was there to fetch me, and we drove to Elderado Hills where he lives with his girlfriend Cherie and her two kids, Jenna (15) and Jake (11). They live in a beautiful home which Cherie has decorated, and it really is stunning!!! They have a pool and hot-tub with a lovely outside area which I have been making the most of in the fantastic weather!!!
So, my first full day here and Sam took me out to a couple of vinyards/wineries!! Enroute, we first stopped at site of the gold rush mine, where in January 1848, James Wilson Marshall discovered gold while constructing a saw mill along the American River northeast of present-day Sacramento. We wandered around this site, and walked around the fascinating museum which has a very well documented accounts of the time of the gold rush!!
Our first stop at the vinyards was at Boeger Winery www.boegerwinery.com where I sampled their complimentary 6 wines. Sam gave up drinking about a year ago, so he was just looking on, and enjoying the conversation!!! The vinyard is set in beautiful surroundings, and the tasting rooms have an authentic cellar feel, with a great hostess!!! Each wine we tasted was described on a very informative 'crib sheet', and really helped you with appreciating the wine!!! We made a few purchased, and headed down to the town of Placerville for lunch. We found a lovely deli that served delicious sandwiches and soup, and left feeling well fed!!! We stopped in at a cheese shoppe and again, you can't enjoy a good bottle of wine without some complimentary cheeses to go with it, so we made a couple of purchases there aswell.
Our next winery was Dobra Zemlja. www.dobrazemlja.com This vinyard prides itself on their Zinfandel and Syrah wines. I found them very heavy, but again enjoyed the great host and his entertaining stories. The vineyard is set in beautiful gardens that are in full bloom with the warmer temperatures of spring!! See the colours of the flower garden in my photo album.
By this stage, I am flagging a little, and the wine drinking in the afternoon sun is starting to take it's toll, but to no avail, as Sam is hellbent on taking me to one last winery!! so we head off ot Karly, one of Sam's favourites. www.karlywines.com. Located at the end of a mile long driveway meandering through oak trees, vinyards, and wild turkeys!!!! See photo album!!! Enjoyed some more complimentary tastings, and made more purchases!!! 'Hic'!!!
Next we made a stop at "Poor Reds". It's a popular biker hang out, but it's friendly to everyone. This place is world famous for the drink, The Golden Cadillac. Galliano being one of the ingredients, Poor Red's customers consume more than half of all the Galliano sold in the United States. Creme de Cocoa, Galliano blended over crushed ice!!! Very good indeed!!! We chatted with the barman a bit, then I surrended and told Sam I needed to get going, as I was now feeling more than inebriated!!! LOL!!! hic, hic!!!
We got home around 5ish, and I went to lie down for an hour before we headed out for dinner. We went to Bistro 33. www.bistro33.com. The food was really good, and the waiter staff very friendly!!! We didn't stay late, as we had Jake with us, and I wasn't feeling like a huge night after the day of drinking in the sun, so we were home by 10pm, and I was so glad to have my head on the pillow by 10.30.... What a great day, and so good to see Sam again!!!
