So today we left for the grand Canon via the Hoover Dam, I was shattered this morning and did not want to wake up but when I eventually did I packed up my stuff and waited for the others to phone to say they were ready to go. We did a lazy express checkout at the bottom of the lifts by putting our keys into a post box and headed to the car. We left the hotel and stopped at the Las Vegas sign as it had been night time when we had arrived and we hadn't taken a picture, once that was done we headed towards the Hoover dam which was very impressive and a lot had been done since we visited 10 years ago they now have a visitor center, car park and have built a massive bridge that goes over the top, which we drove over as the other route through to Arizona was closed.
We drove for about an hour before stopping to re-fuel and then another hour before I needed the bathroom and we stopped for lunch, we stopped in a little service station that appeared to do more European portion sizes until we read the front of the menu that said everyone was entitled to one re-order of the meal so getting 2 portions for the price of 1… I chose to have something off their healthy eating list- a hot chicken wrap which came with fries, cheese the smallest bit of lettuce and lots of sauce- the wrap was done up in a different way to how we would do it back home holding about 2 times as much in it- so wasn't very healthy eating but it was nice enough.
I then decided I was quite thirsty so got a drink from the garage which holds 44 OZ- it was massive- and too heavy for me to hold, we all made comment about how I'd be the next one that needed to stop for a bathroom break but I wasn't and was pleased when Darren said he needed a drink as it then meant I was able to start drinking my drink properly, When we next stopped at a service station there was a very cool shop attached to it and Darren is now the proud owner of a Stetson hat.
We then drove for about another half hour before pulling into a days in on route 66 in Williams Arizona not too far away from the grand canon and the next town over from Flagstaff, I owed money to Bethan and David for tours and hotel rooms and so I was able to wipe out my debt for both of them by paying for their rooms for the night, and once we had put our bags away we drove to see the Grand Canon.
We drove through Williams seeing lots of route 66 shops and diners and then drove through Bedrock where there is a sign of Fred Flintstone welcoming you, driving through the national park we saw a family of Elks and slowed down to take photos. The canon was very impressive and I was grateful we were visiting it in the evening as it was still quite warm when we first got there and after yesterday at the pool I had caught the sun now joining the slightly lobster brigade- although not as much as mam's back or David's arms. We got loads of photos and got to see the sun set over the canon, they don't really have dusk here it goes from light to dark very quickly so we were soon on our way back to the hotel which took around an hour.
Today I spent a large portion of the drive trying to top the high score Bethan has set on my I-pad on train conductor USA- Miami she has now got a score of 153 and the closest I got to that before the battery died was 134- I am determined however that I will beat her score by the end of the trip!
On our way back to the hotel we stopped for food at Rod's World Famous Steak House- it was incredible, at first I thought it was overpriced however non of the steaks had a weight on them so paying $16 for a steak which was prob 12 oz steak which was advertised as a petit steak which also came with fries and a starter of sour dough break and salad or soup it really wasn't. Darren who has decided he prob should start on his diet now only ordered a side of fries however his plate ended up with half of 2 steaks, rib, and battered fish so he kept up his reputation yet again. I have to say the food at the place tonight was amazing- I ate far to much but it was so nice! The toilets at this place however were crazy- they were kinda saloon style doors however instead of wood it was the glass you have on your bathroom windows and if you were stood up you could see over the top completely ruling out privacy but luckily I was the only one in the bathroom thank goodness. David had the soup for a starter and liked it so much he was contemplating 2nds and asked the guy for the recipe.
We are now back at the hotel and all ready for bed so im gonna call it a night and get some sleep!
