Today Monday 27th Aug- we traveled from Amarillo TX to Oklahoma City, OK. We drove through McLean where there was one shop open and the rest was pretty shut up- we originally thought the barbed wire museum was closed as normally its only open 2 days a week but because it's the summer it was open today so we got to have a look around for free- it was quite impressive and we got to see the barbed wire used in WW1 the German's being much more threatening that the British, and got to see some amazing barbed wire sculptures too. We then drove to Shamrock where in their local paper they had a full page spread dedicated to their drive through ATM which has neon on it and was opposite U-turn café which is one of the buildings that is used as inspiration for cars movie. The town was having some work done to their sidewalks and it had a little more going on than McLean but not much more.
We then drove over the state border into Oklahoma and stopped at Oklahoma City checked into a days in and dropped off our things- we realized Oklahoma was the city of crickets with them jumping around everywhere as soon as we got out of the car- Bethan has decided she could never live here because of the bugs. We went looking for shops and came across an outlet mall- I have to say it was the worst mall I have ever been in- was not very accessible in the shops and they basically only stocked size 00-12 and it was all over priced up-market clothing so we left and decided to go for dinner we drove into the city to find that the main city is just high risers and businesses so went back out towards the mall so we could eat, and visit Wal-Mart for me to buy some jeans before returning to the city to see the Oklahoma City Memorial for the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building that was Bombed in 1995, the memorial garden was stunning with chairs representing the children and adults that died being different sizes depending if they were an adult or a child, with lights on the seating area and film of water representing the road that the car bomb was on and the time 9:01 and 9:03 representing that time stood still at 9:02 when the bomb went off. It was a lovely tribute to those who lost and had their lives changed forever by it, after spending some time there and deciding no-one actually lives in Oklahoma city and people must just commute in as it was a ghost city at night we headed back to the hotel so we could all get some sleep.
