Well I finished my first week of school Thursday night. I only have classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, which is awesome because I have 4 day weekends. Lectures are similar to those at KU, but still different. The teachers post all of the lecture notes online and read directly from the notes in lecture so there is no point in writing anything down in class. One thing that I find really odd is that all of the students will have conversations all throughout the lecture; and I don't mean whisper to each other, but actually speak in normal tone. The professors don't say anything, but it is very distracting for me. Also in one of my classes kids will talk on their cell phones in the middle of class and the teacher doesn't say anything. It's very different. On top of my computer science courses I am also learning Putonghua, or Mandarin; Mandarin is the language of business, but is only spoken in mainland China, whereas Cantonese is only spoken in Hong Kong. Wow, this is a very difficult language to learn. Not only do the letters have completely different sounds, but there are 4 different tones when speaking; I will be happy just learning a few phrases by the end of the semester. All in all I think I will have a pretty good semester, but again it is very early in the semester.
