Happy Halloween everyone!
Of course, Halloween is toned down a bit in Mexico City, but there were a few revelers around town in costume and makeup. We were almost run down by a pair of masked motorcyclists in a crosswalk tonight. Scary!
Our morning started out with a leisurely breakfast with pastries from the incredible Pasteleria Ideal bakery. So many cakes, cookies, pastries and desserts on offer in the large shop. It was incredible. People loaded up large trays in a pile of pastries, and walked out with boxes of mixed baked goods. And it was the same story a couple days ago when we visited. I have so many questions.
Our first site seeing stop was the Anthropology Museum in Chapultepec Park. The park is Mexico City's version of NYC's Central Park, but triple the size. It's very lush and there's lots going on, including museums, gardens, a zoo, a lake...
The Anthropology Museum focuses on the story of pre-Columbian Mexican people and has many impressive artifacts, large and small. There's also an incredible waterfall fountain in the middle of the large plaza. We stayed a couple hours, and could easily have stayed for a day or two.
Our second stop was the Museum of Art Modern, also in Chapultepec Park. The highlight is The Two Fridas painting by Frida Kahlo. It's one of her major works, and we had the room with the painting to ourselves for quite a while.
After a rest at home, we made the trek by transit to Azteca stadium for a late night futbol game, with Cruz Azul and Leòn. The stadium is world-famous in sport. It hosted two World Cup final matches and the Olympics, and used to sit over 100,000 fans. There were nowhere near that amount at today's game. We bought tickets at the stadium for about $7 each, for seats in row 9 at the 20 yard line. Such a deal for close tickets. The crowd was small, but in good spirits. Vendors roam the aisle selling beer, snack food, pastries and donuts, team merchandise, instant noodles, personal pizzas, tacos, hamburgers, toys, and probably more. The halftime show featured inflatable bags of concrete, Thriller-dancing mascots, and skeleton cheerleaders posing for pictures. The home team, Cruz, won the game 1-0.
After getting back to our neighborhood, we picked up some late night Halloween tacos, before heading home to bed. The journey continues.
