Day 2, November 17th
Today we wanted to just get acclimated to where we were so we had no big tourist plans; we just wanted to try and get oriented. We took the metro into what was referred to as Central Tokyo, where there was an english speaking tourist office. Here we figured, would be a good place to start. Once we arrived in this area we realized that Tokyo was just how we imagined it to be, we were just staying out of the hustle and bustle which was kind of nice. We spent most of the day walking around trying to find an ATM that would accept foreign issued cards because apparently most of them do not. We eventually learned that the Post Office or Citi Bank were the only two places we could get money. At this point were starving and we do not know how to order food or even what to order so we had to eat McDonalds...besides it was cheap. It was actually not bad almost better in than in the States, I had a nice fresh salad and Brandon the usual but it was food. We checked out the Sony store which was supposed to have all the latest and the greatest which it did but nothing too crazy that we had not seen before. Anyways after a day of roaming the streets of Ginza which is a major shopping district not unlike Michigan Ave. in Chicago we made our way back to the hostel to meet up with Yuki. Yuki is our friend from Chicago, he went to school with Kristi and plays soccer with Brandon and is originally from Kobe, Japan and he arranged his trip home so that he could hang out with us for a day! He was a champ he made it to our hostel dropped his bag and then we turned around to go into Shibuya to meet his girlfriend for dinner. Shibuya he said is like the Wicker Park of Tokyo but when we arrived at the station we could not quite see that. We emerged from the train station in a sea of people to an intersection full of brightly lit buildings and signs. We thought there was no way we would find his girlfriend; but just like that we did. They took us to what they referred to as a restaurant that serves traditional homestyle cooking. Since we had no idea what the menu said and what the pictures represented we trusted them to make the food choices. Yuki, knowing that Brandon does not like anything raw ordered nothing but cooked food. It was all very good, I still cannot tell you what exactly we ate but it consisted of a soup and then some skewers and then a rice and egg dish. I also tried a flavored sake drink that was very good. It was a very nice little restaurant and the food was excellent. Since the trains seem to stop after twelve we headed to the hostel where Yuki crashed on our couch!
