Today we arrived in Singapore from Kuala Lumpur, only a quick 1 hour flight. Singapore is nice because it is completely accessible. It only cost around a dollar to get from the airport to the city on the metro and not much after that to get around. We stayed in Little India at the INN Crowd which was nice. We were pretty exhausted at this point and so we just did a little walk around the CBD and Quays area to get a little taste of the city and then we just went back to the hostel to chill out.
Singapore has a definite western vibe and is a city based around shopping. It's funny as we have been traveling and getting stories from other travlers not many suggested Singapore. Saying it was just another city, yet we like checking out cities and getting a feeling for how the countries operate and in a sense anywhere we go is just another city, micro or macro. We didn't do much in Singapore other than taking in the walkable sights. Since shopping is so big we went to check out Vivo City which is a new mall designed by Toyo Ito and mostly we went to check out the architecture but since it turned out to be somewhat of a let down we just checked out the shopping and took in a movie. The city itself offers a great dynamic mix of mostly Indian and Chinese with some westerners sprinkled in. I still got some curious looks which is surprising because westerners are common here so I'm still trying to figure out what it is that is so shocking. At night we checked out China town and it's market which was one of the best markets we've been to, it really had some quality stuff. There is a really great museum here for the Red Dot design awards but it was closed both days we were there so that was disappointing.
Our last day in town we went a little outside the main hub to check out the housing and to see a new Mosque that was designed by Forum Architects. It's really crazy the amount of social housing that exists here, from what we saw it is all that exists and they have found a way for it to work for them. As we took the train out we could see one giant housing project after another all complete with schools and shopping needs. We ended the day walking around the old colonial district and checking out the multiple skyscrapers done by various modern architects.
