Backpack Party!!
Hey all!!!
Its twenty to two in the morning and I only just got onto the computer without being harrassed for being on it for too long, as everybody has gone to bed!!! However, I am having to type quietly, as there is a bedroom right next to the computay desk and they are probably getting really pissed off right now with me typing away at this hour disturbing their beauty sleep!!!! Ooooopppsy!!lol.
Well, today I have been to Petropolis, I'll have you know!(I was trying to think about what that name reminded me of...and it's superman....Metropolis???Or am I just making that up?? I'm not so sure!!lol)
Anyway, I was rudely awaken by the sound of bullet rain lashing down on the dungeon windows early this morning, I actually thought that we were under siege or something- anybody who has seen me in the mornings knows how confused I can be!!!lol. I looked up the hill to catch a glimpse of Christo, as I do every morning, for a bit of inspiration or something, I dunno...and he wasn't even visible it was raining so hard- I should have known then that it was a bad idea to set 1 foot out of the refuge of the volunteer house, but against my better judgement, other Vicky and I decided that the day could not be wasted under any circumstances, and headed off on our adventure.
I don't actually think that we knew where we were going exactly- but other Vicky was armed with a Lonely Planet guide, and I was armed with a Brazilian Portuguese Phrasebook, just in case we needed to communicate anything complex...and off we went!!
It was relatively easy to purchase a ticket at the Rodavario ( central bus station) and before we knew it, the hour and a halfs journey outside of Rio had ended.
Much to my utter delight, upon alighting the bus I experienced a certain degree of chilliness that I have only prviously experienced in Wales...yes...that is how very cold it was!! But, haha! I had packed my placky mac, so I felt smug for a while...until I realised that it had no built in wind protection...and it probably wasn't even going to protect me from the absurd amounts of water falling from the sky, either. Damn it Vicky!!
So anyway, we made our way down to the tourist information office where we were greeted by a very alarming looking man, that beared an uncanny resemblance to Mr Burns from the Simpsons who insisted that he spoke English but refused to give us any directions, apart from, "go thatta way, and then go thatta way..." whilst waving his finger eratically around the map.
Sod this we thought , and set about on our own mission to find the Imperial Museum.
A few days later....only joking! Well, it did take a good while, though- I think that we walked in a perfect circle around the city- we reached the museum, which was very lovely actually, the family home of some guy named Don Pedro, and his son.....imaginatively named Don Pedro, also!lol.
Sadly though, amongst all the lovely cultural stuff and hoards of hyperacive adolescents, I was most impressed by the furry house slippers that they gave you to wear over your shoes around the house!! Apparently, they are multifunctional as they polish the floor too- but that's just lazy cleaning in my opinion!!!lol.
OOO and we saw a big crown that was pretty...you know what Im like, a bloody magpie- if it's shiny, I'll love it!!!lol.
Then we were directed to the Cathedral, where all the Don Pedro's were buried (queue another lap of the city!) when the heavens decided to bleed all their radiators or something, but just on Vicky and I!! Nobody else seemed to be even damp, and us poor sods were walking around like drowned rats, as the rain had long since saturated my handy "shower proof mac!" (to be fair though, they naver said that it was bath proof!) And I hated evryone and just wanted them to all be wet and cold like me!!!AAARRGGHH!!!!
Well, aside from the Cathedral being home to the tombs of the Pedros', it was, well, the Cathedral equivalent of a Barret Home, shall I say.
It all looked a bit pop-up, like the sides had just been lay flat on the floor and hoisted up by a crane- and it probably was, as it was only completed in the 1950s somtime, which was rather confusing to me as I wandered how these Don Pedro guys could be buried inside it if it was only 50 odd years old!! It transpired though, that their remains were transported there after the ban on the Royal Family was revoked or something. To be honest, I was losing the will to live at this point so I just nodded at all the Portuguese that came my way- they could have been calling me a big hairy man beast for all I know!!lol. And they probably were judging by the utter horror I was greeted with when I finally looked in a mirror after being wet through- It just aint good to have hair this prone to frizz in a situation like that!!!!
After pop-up church, other Vicky and I had lost all faith in Petropolis, and decided that it was a crime against ourselves to go any further in such conditions- so we sat in Spoiletta- and ate ourselves into a stupour. The carb overdose somewhat detracted my attention to the fact that my jeans could have easily been wrung out and created a small lake and that my placcy machad soaked through to my underwear.
So we decided to come home- I know Im a crap tourist and all that and true tourists brave the elements, but seriously, I don't think that I was even that wet in Foz Do Iguaçu- and that was right near some of the friekin biggest waterfalls in the world, which also had the added bonus of being remotely interesting!!!lol.
The only other remotely funny thing that happenned today is that when we got back to the house, me and Paul were sat on the couch chatting about our surnames and he was ripping mine,( for obvious reasons) when I took a sip of water, and he said "my surname sounds a bit like willy!" and for some unknown reason this was absolutely hilarious to me, and I spat out my water all over the living room table through my nose, like the true lady that I am!!!
His name is Williamson, though- it don't sound anything like a willy the crazy fool!! Laycock, on the other hand, now, that's something to complain about...lol!
Anyways, I'm quite tired now, so I'm off to beddy byes for the night! This entry probably doesnt even make sense Im so tired so I apologise for the crapness!
Anyway, thats what I have been up to- let me know what yous have all been doing won't ya?! Please! I really wanna know!!
I hope that you are ok- I just remembered it's less than a week until Mum and Paul arrive in Rio and I can act as tour guide- Im so excited!!
Love you all, miss you all as always!!
Take care!!
