Backpack Party!!
After finally establishing the plan of action, Andrea and I set about heading to the Rodavario( central bus station) to embark a bus to Paraty, which as you may remember, can be quite a frightful experience! So, wisely we slept most of the 4 hour journey, blissfully unaware of the cliffs of oblivion being skimmed by the bus just millimeters away from us!!!
We arrived in Paraty at about midnight, and set about finding a Pasada for the night- no problem, we thought- Paraty is ALWAYS dead, and you can have your pick of any Pousada you want! How wrong we were....
Every single one we went to said that they had no vacancies, and after about an hour and a half, and about 20 Pousadas, we started to worry a little if we were actually gonna find anywhere to stay!
Turns out that for the first time in the history of Paratys existence, and just our bloody luck- there was abig festival happenning there over the weekend....oohhhh...but wait for it, this wasn't just any festival- this was a literary festival, so of course, the whole population of Brasil would inevitably be there!
Andrea and I were dumbfounded- at home you'd be hard pressed tp get enough people to even make a literary festival, nevermind fill a town with one!!! And that was the reason we couldnt find a room!!!!???? WHAT!!!???
So, anyways, refusing to believe that the information we had recieved was true, we carried on in vain looking for a pousada to stay in for another half an hour. We were beginning to feel slightly Biblical at this point, and I was contemplating telling people that I was heavily pregnant, sticking my backpack under my t-shirt, and asking them if anybody had a spare barn that we could use!!!!lol.
Anyway, just as we gave up hope, and began to think that maybe we would have to sleep on the beach for the next few hours until daybreak... we found the Pousada Tropical. I thought that it was too good to be true, and hence the name, it must therefore be a mirage, but they actually did have a room for us!! PRAISE THE LORD! Only, it was 50 Real each for all of the..hmmm....5 hours sleep that we were gonna have there!
Bearing in mind that normally, a night in Paraty would normally cost, on average, about 30 Real, I would normally have contested this ludicrous price and told them to stick it somewhere tropical where the sun-dont-shine, but as it was so late, we paid the price, and were glad of the place to stay.
Now, my Mother is probably screeching at the computer screen as she reads this saying "why didnt you go on hostel world and book a hostel beforehand?!" or, perhaps, "why didnt you research what was going on in Paraty before you set off???
Well, as I said before, Mum, we didnt expect to have to hunt out a hostel, and secondly, in our quest to arrange the trip, we went on Paratys' website, which said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the fesival at all!!! Which made the concept of a literary festival filling the whole town even more hard to comprehend and even more random!!!!!hahaha.
Anyway, the room was alright, and we had a tv, which meant that we had even less than 5 hours sleep, as we watched that all night! So, it actually turned out that we paid 50Real each to watch a bit of tv-oh well, at least it was a roof over our heads!!! And we had major giggles at the Brazilian Jeremy Kyle/ Jules Holland show (how random!!!??) which included a really really big woman telling some kind of Brazilian model chick to get on the floor and grunt or something coz she was too skinny!!! (translation courtesy of Andrea!) lol.
Sao Paulo-
Upon waking up from our television viewing, we headed off to find food, and then went back to the bus station to arrange a bus to Sao Paulo, which was relatively hassle free and cheap, so we were happy. But, due to the distinct lack of sleep we had experienced, we became somewhat confused about which bus company we had booked with, and were waiting for a Costa Verde, when in actual fact, the bus we needed was atotally random one!!!
After about 10 minutes sat at the terminal looking a little confused, we figured out that the bus we needed was in fact behind the Costa Verde, and subsequently ended up with us practically sprinting to the bus just as it was about to leave the station!!! We got CURSED AT by the Brazilians on that bus who had been waiting for us to turn up!!! Sowwy!!!! lol.
AHHHH Im running out of time on this computer- I will have to finish this update another time I will try and do it over the next few days I promise!!
I hope that you are all well anyway!
Miss you loads!!!
