Well a lot has happened in one week! Last thursday night we were minding our own business in an indian restaurant when a big earthquake hit honiara (6.7 on richter scale). we obviously wet ourselves once people started running for the door, however once it was over we returned a few minutes later to eat our meal. however on the rest of the island people were literally running for the hills, i went in last friday to an empty postnatal ward. even the c-section women grabbed their babies and ran! they did return later in the day once everyone had calmed down. last weekend we went on a trek to Mataniko waterfalls, walking uphill for an hour and a half in 35 degree heat with no shade. however it was well worth it when we got there, and we swam in the river all the way back down (had to keep a lookout for crocodiles all the way). Eating out here is quite cheap for the food that you get, I have been trying some more fish, including snapper and king fish. the weather is much nicer this week, over thirty degrees each day and even though we are by the sea there is little breeze! working on our tans nicely now, will actually managed to get sunburnt yesterday whilst i was in the hospital slaving away. I have delivered another baby and have also been keeping busy on the wards, seeing things like malaria and syphilis in pregnancy, which would never happen at home! we are busy making plans for the weekend, going snorkelling on saturday morning then overnight fishing on saturday night. There are 16 medical students here so there are plenty of people to hang around with, its nice to be able to have proper conversations with people rather than trying to speak pijin! anyway we're off to the pool now, write again next week xx
