Yesterday, Easter Monday, along with the entire population of Melbourne, we left Phillip Island on the only road out. This resulted in a 2-hour long traffic jam. It would have been quicker to walk!
After several additional hour on the road, we finally arrive at my friend Lelania's home in the Melbourne suburb of Wantirna, where we were warmly welcomed by her husband Rob, her sons Ben and Hayden and their puppy Barnie! I haven't seen Lelania since the "good old days" of Fairmont High School in Durbanville, but we were able to quickly catch up on the last 20 years or so! Rob cooked up an Aussie feast on the BBQ and we chatted until late.
In the morning, we packed a picnic and Lelania and the boys took us wine tasting at some of the best wine estates in the Yarra Valley. First up was Domaine Chandon - a subsidiary of the now multinational Moët and Chandon French champagne makers who have now branched out to countries like Australia, China, Brazil and India! We took a free guided tour of the cellars and riddling room (this is where the bottles of sparkling wine are turned to get the bubbles). We tried all of their wines and got quite tipsy!
Next up was the Yaring Estate which has an amazing art gallery and views of the surrounding valley mountains. We had a lovely day with good wine, great company and yummy food. It's been wonderful reconnecting with Lelania and meeting her wonderful family in Australia!
