Our longest drive so far. Today we clocked a whopping 600kms and crossed the stateline from South Australia into Victoria.
We hit the road before 8am and drove and drove and drove through an arid climate. Our chief aim today was to get as close as possible to the Great Ocean Road. This was made all the more difficult by the onset of the Easter weekend and the distinct lack of accommodation in most places - especially anywhere near the coast!
On our way down, we past Mount Gambier - an extinct volcanic crater with a remarkably blue lake. We stopped to take photos and drive around the rim of the crater, although we didn't stay for long. The weather was taking a turn for the worse, there were too many fast food joints and all the shops were closed as it was Good Friday.
We were caught in a heavy storm as we headed towards the coast. Heavy rain lashed the car and made visibility a bit difficult, but we ploughed through to get to Port Fairy and the YHA hostel. We called ahead and luckily managed to secure the last 2 beds!
