We spent the day in Melbourne city centre and got an overview by travelling on the free circle tram. Luckily, Melbourne has a compact city centre so it's quite easy to get around on foot and via tram.
First stop: the Greek Quarter and lunch at The Stalactites. Fasolatha (Greek style bean soup) and lamb souvlaki with plenty of tzatziki - yum yum! Got chatted up by the ageing lothario Greek waiter from Athens.
Waiter: "Are you travelling with your boyfriend?"
Me: "No, with a friend"
Waiter: "Ah"
5min later
Waiter: "Did you leave your husband and children behind?"
Me: "No, I'm not married."
Waiter: "Really?"
Me: "No children"
Waiter: "Really?"
Me: "Yes, really"
Another 5min pass and he returns
Waiter: "Can we have a picture together?"
Me: "Uhm, ok"
Waiter motions to his colleague and hands him my camera: "Come here - take a picture of me and my friend"
Returns 10min later.
Waiter: "Do you have an email address?"
Me: "Uhm, yes"
Waiter: "I can show you around Melbourne"
Me: "I leave tomorrow"
After practising some Greek speak and filling up my stomach (the portions were massive), I headed off to explore the city further and ended up getting lost in the small pedestrian alleyways near Flinders Station. There were lots of vintage-inspired shops, chi-chi coffee places and cutting edge bars. I bought a couple of books at a discount store and headed off to the station to meet my friend Rochelle, whom I haven't seen for several years.
We drank a bottle of red wine at a nearby bar and went for dinner to a Korean restaurant in China Town. It wa great catching up where we'd left off.
After she headed home, I walked past the Town Hall and bought the last ticket for a show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival - Mark Okine's sketch "Being black & chicken & s***". It was hilarious! He's definitely one to watch!
Then, time to catch the last train back, where Rob was waiting patiently for us at the station. Late night chat with Lelania and a great way to end my stay in Melbourne.
