Left this morning for Zakopane, a ski resort town in Poland close to the Slovakian border. Arrived midday as it wasnt far from Krakow and went for a walk through the main town square.
Zakopane is such a cute little town and surrounded by the ski mountains. South of Zakopane are the Tatra Mountains. The main street is full of these stalls that sell blocks of smoked cheese- first they taste good but then it just gets sickening.. After our little walk, me Bec and Cinthia went to the base of a mountain north of the town (I think it was called Gubalowka) where we ended up bumping into the rest of the eastern trekker group. We all went up on the furnicular, (after buying tickets from a lady who had a short spaz at us).
The view from the top was stunning, and there was a luge, taboggan type thing that you could ride down the mountain on. There are also these huge dogs similar to huskies but are pure white and massive... so cute. A few of us decided to walk back down the mountain which ended up taking 2 hours I think as we got semi lost as were walking off the map, and also had issues asking Polish people where we were. (btw it is amazing how useful hand gestures are when communicating in a foreign language). We walked so long we swore we were going to walk into Slovakia.
After finally getting to the base of the mountain we found a little shop where we all just sat down and had some drinks and snacks. We were so knackered after the walk and it was so hot as well. The guys hated Carlsberg but after that walk they all thought it was the best beer they had ever had haha
We then left to go back to the hostel to get ready for dinner. Me and Bec went to buy some food for the picnic we were supposed to have tomorrow on our way to Budapest. The strawberries and cherries and almost every fruit is so cheap here.
Dinner was at a place similar to Wildfire back home and they had meat roasting on the spit and a traditional polish band playing music. After that a few of us went to an Absinthe bar where a couple of us had a shot.. not sure if Absinthe is a traditional Polish thing but it was like drinking turpentine (not that I know what turpentine tastes like)
Most of us then headed back to the hotel and we all chilled out in one of the rooms. I think the absinthe had gone to most peoples heads and we headed to bed not long after.
