Day 1: Travel from Stavanger to Rome took a while, seeing as we had a four hour stopover at Heathrow. We managed to get to our accommodation in Rome at 9.30pm after leaving our place at 9am, so it was a solid 12 hours. We headed out for a late dinner and were planning on watching the World Cup semi between Germany and Brazil, but by that stage it was 5 nill so we flagged.
Day 2: We started the holiday with a cheeky 10km run around a nearby park which I thought was a pretty good effort due to the temperature. Next stop was the Colloseo, Palatino and Foro Romano. We couldn't believe the size of the queues!! Thankfully Van pulled out a magic trick and we had earlier purchased a Roma Pass which meant we could go to the front of the queue. Definitely bet waiting in line for four hours! Then we checked out the Pantheon and wandered over to Piazza Navona for a delicious late lunch. After lunch it was obviously time for a siesta and then dinner in Testaccio which is where the Italians eat. We went to this self service place and the chef helped us choose a range of things. Neither of us had any of them before and they were all delicious! We walked home past the Fontana di Trevi (which was getting restored), got tricked into buying a picture of ourselves on my iPhone, buying a rose and accidentally walked around Castel Sant Angelo due to a moat in the way (not a bad thing though).
Day 3: First up was the Vatican and Van once again came through with another queue skipping magic trick (this time with a pre-purchased ticket). On the way there we got breakfast from the same place as yesterday and Van claimed that it was the best coffee she'd had in Europe. We spent three hours wandering through all the collections of statues, mummies, galleries and Sistine Chapel. What an incredible collection! Next was St Peters square and then a picnic in the park we ran around the morning before (Villa Borghese). Once we'd gathered some energy we made our way to some Spanish steps and had a coffee (wasn't as good as the one this morning). A quick nap and a run later we were on our way out to dinner in Trastevere. What a wonderful place to eat out. The area used to be run down but has since been done up and has narrow streets with only a small gap in between the restaurants on the street. On the way home we walked along the Fiume Tevere which had a whole lot of bars on the riverside.
Day 4: First up we walked along the Fiume Tevere to Campo de Fiori which is a market and purchased some pasta which we'll have in Zermatt. Then we went to two museums full of 2000 year old statues and old ruins and had the number 1 lunch in Rome on tripadviser. After all this we tried to go to a park, but it ended up being the Presidents residence and after taking a bit too long with a gelato we had to run back to the hotel to get our bags to catch the train to Florence. Just made it!
