Originally we had not planned an overseas trip for 2017. But when a good mate invites you to his wedding and then tells you it is in San Francisco - well that is an opportunity too good to miss we say!
Shayne Webley and Greg trained together at the Queensland Police Academy in 2002, Shayne's room was across the hall from Greg's. Although a lot of study and hard work was required at the Academy, these two managed to form a life long bond. Many discussions were had as to the merits of the Wallabies and All Blacks (usually the All Blacks came out on top) as did Shayne when the fun and games came to wrestling antics!
In 2016 Shayne visited USA for a holiday, met Elizabeth Perez Freestone and the rest, as they say, is history. They only had a few days together before the end of Shayne's holiday but he returned to San Francisco in February 2017 and then Elizabeth visited Shayne on the Gold Coast in May. It was then that Shayne proposed and was accepted. Wedding plans were made and the invitations required a trip to San Francisco. Greg was also honoured to be asked to be part of Shayne's wedding party.
We decided to make the trip for the wedding in to a month's holiday. Three other couples that we know and Shayne's family would also be making the trip for the wedding.
Upon arrival in San Francisco our first stop was a gathering to meet Elizabeth's family. We enjoyed a night of good food, a few drinks and great company with Elizabeth and her family.
The following day involved a wedding rehersal for Greg at Pier 3 in the afternoon, followed by dinner with Shayne's family and our friends at The Cheesecake Factory. As it was also Gavin (Shayne's Dad) and Greg's birthdays so cake was delivered and devoured as we sang Happy Birthday.
Wedding Day was Saturday 16th September. The ceremony and reception were aboard the Hornblower Cruise Ship on San Francisco Bay. The ceremony was on the deck outside with a great view of Alcatraz - I hope that is not a bad omen!
After photos we all sat inside for the reception as we sailed out in to the Bay. We sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge and admired the lights of the city as we danced the night away. We returned to the dock at 10:30pm and said our good byes before returning to our hotel.
We wish Shayne and Elizabee every happiness as they set out on married life together.
