As this is our 8th trip to USA and we have visited many of the 50 states - 44 to be exact! Some states we have visited several times. Today we travelled about 580km and visited 2 new states. Our route was a bit out of the way for where we are eventually heading but the chance to visit 2 more states was too good ignore. We left Colorado Springs after breakfast and headed east towards the Kansas border.
The scenery in the Northern Plains, as this area is known, was quite dull after the beautiful landscapes of Colorado. The land was flat and the roads were long and straight. Not much was growing beside the road until after our morning tea stop at Limon. This thriving metropolis consisted of 5 motels, 5 fast food joints and 2 service stations.
After morning tea the long straight roads continued and the land remained flat but we started to see crops being grown and silos dotted the landscape. The drizzly rain continued today as we approached the Kansas border just past Burlington.
Once in Kansas, the long straight roads continued but there was more agriculture beside the road. We stopped at Colby, Kansas, for lunch - a town a little bigger than Limon but it still seemed to have more fast food joints and motels than anything else. At Colby we turned left and continued north to Nebraska for the night.
We are staying in McCook. This town was established in 1882 as a new railroad center halfway between Denver and Omaha.
Tomorrow we will drive east through Nebraska before heading south back in to Kansas.
Only 4 states left to visit now - Alaska, Iowa, North Dakota and West Virginia, they will have to wait for another trip I guess.
