Wow.....so it has been awhile since I have posted anything, minus the few photos the other day showing the 1st day of the long study tour I went on. Have no fear, I will back date blog entries and photos for the trip to Sweden and Finland, just need to finish sorting through the pics because i know none of you all want to look at 1100+ pics of chairs:):):) Plus I have interesting stories and commentary to post the pics...especially the ferry trips from Stockholm to Turku, Finland and from Helsinki to Stockholm, there might even be video out there somewhere...hehehehe... So this post and the pics I am posting are about my chair I am designing and building for the summer here in Denmark. We had to come up with three concepts and then pick one of the designs. My original favorite is the chair in the middle, but I was directed to bukd the first one, with some modifications. It is more femine and organic with some curves and has been separated and raised so it is now two parts that will be connected with 4 steel tubes. So after spending last week working on 1:1 drawings and ironing out the kinks, at least on paper, I was ready to jump right in it at the woodshop! This week I am on the second shift (2:30pm-10:00pm) and finally feel as if it has been productive, especially after the little hiccups involved with building furniture. But first I want to state how REFRESHING it is to be in a shop with people who KNOW what they are doing and CARE about the quality of the work and aren't just there to talk and get pissy because you actually want to work and learn...hint hint shop teacher at the Corcoran..anywho..... So far this week I have created a steel frame with wooden supports that will create the bottom piece of my vanity stool. For a simple design (which does not mean boring) it has been a little bit of trial and error. Had to cut, adjust and weld the original frame so that it would be correct as well as having the cut and reconnect the wooden frame supports because the stell frame became a different height. This was all possible because of one of the shop professors Gudmundur, who is a shop GOD!!! So I know I have probably started losing some of you with all this shop talk so I will try to condense my little dialogue:):):) So the stell frame goes over the wooden support frame, next i had to cover it with heavy plastic so that the steel won't rust from the moisture from the glue and wood and transfer the rust onto the venner. then I had to put a wide strip of felt along the underside of the frame for help with the vacuum bending process. Finally I have my veneer sheets selected, cut and ready to be glued together, put across the stell part of the frame and then put into the vacuum sealer to bend the veneer to the shape of my design. Hopefully it will be in the vacuum seal tomorrow:):):) then I will cut the existing frame to fit the top part of the seat, repeat and viola I will have both parts of my chair and thrn it will be ready for my to attach the 2 pieces, sand and paint so it will be ready for the exhibit 2 weeks from today...whew....:):):) Well that is all for now. On a more persoaln note....loving Copenhagen, happy to finally have some sunny weather again, having a bast, still losing the pounds and ready for this weekend to hopefully go out dancing and drinking some well deserved beers:):):)
