(Another Sam blog due to content of the day's main activity!)
With a few days to go in our epic month away, being spent back in São Paulo, things are rather winding down a bit- although there are still several exciting things to experience before we leave.
Today we went out and about with Gisela on shopping or other errands either side of a fabulous barbecue lunch where we feasted on delicious steaks cooked to perfection. Then in the evening, we had the opportunity to go and watch a Brazilian football match!
We went to the Morumbi stadium to watch São Paulo FC- one of four top-division teams from the city. The stadium is an old classic, with a capacity of over 60,000. Whilst there were only 25,000 there for tonight's match against Goais, the atmosphere was still something to behold as São Paulo's fevered support sang and jumped around with gusto.
Unfortunately, São Paulo's players hadn't read the script. They barely turned up, and Goais were 2-0 up by half-time. They were helped out by São Paulo having two defenders with the acceleration and turning circle of ocean liners- again and again the Goais attackers just flew past them. Goais only had about 30 fans in the stadium, but they still managed an impressive conga in celebration!
São Paulo upped the pace in the second half, albeit still lacking in skill somewhat. However the breakthrough never came, and the killer third goal for Goais came after 80 minutes. Upon this goal, the São Paulo fans began streaming out of the stadium in their thousands- those who stayed berated the players in what must have been quite colourful Portuguese given the reactions of those around us!
We stayed until the end, 3-0 the final score. The only other happening of note from the game was that some kind of Brazilian model/actress/celebrity/reality show contestant sat down beside us. Cue lots of people trying to take subtle photos of her which I kept getting in the way of!
Back to the house at almost midnight- lie-in tomorrow methinks!
