KOLKATA, INDIA. SATURDAY MAY 8 2010, 1715 HRS.
Another very hot day today. After a desperate nearly two-hour search in the streets and in the crowd, I still can't find any supermarket which would sell food…? Astonishing. In my first week here in India I have walked dozens of kilometers but I haven't been able to find not one single food store! Only street kitchens, restaurants and those little shops that sell Coca-Cola and Pringles… I simply have to give up, as this endless walking and dehydration is beginning to take its toll on me.
Today for the first time during my entire trip in Asia I began to feel extremely irritated because of the environment. Being constantly almost ran over by cars, constantly encountering foul smells, the sounds of car horns and people shouting. Crap everywhere on the streets, constantly being pushed by people... If you stop to catch your breath for even ten seconds, the beggars start grabbing your arms, drug dealers begin their hello-boss-which-country-you-from mantras and the merchants start insisting you take a look at their splendid shop which is nearby. The tired frustration of not making any sense of it almost drove me to punch the next hellomister on the face.
But as I knew my frustration was mostly because I had not eaten or drank anything during the whole day, I somehow found the temperance to find some place to sit at. To get my mind out of those Extreme Aggressions, I decided to try this 'Lassi' drink they sell everywhere, and it turned out to be a real treat. A cool and a refreshing yoghurt drink! 'The day is saved! Just think positive, no need to buy a bottle of port wine,' I lied to myself.
